“The most important thing I have ever done”

Stevie Nicks’ first single in four years is an “hymn” to abortion rights and the 2022 Dobbs decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade.

The former Fleetwood Mac singer released the music video for “The Lighthouse” on Thursday, but explained in a statement that the song took years to create.

“I wrote this song a few months after Roe v. Wade wrote,” she said. “It seemed like overnight people said, ‘What can we do about this as a collective force…’ For me, it was about writing a song. It took a while because I was traveling.”

“The Lighthouse” is Stevie Nicks’ first single since 2020.

Her statement continued: “Then one morning I was watching the news on TV early and a certain news anchor said something that felt like she was speaking to me – explaining what the loss of Roe v. Wade would mean. I wrote the song the next morning and recorded it that night. That was September 6, 2022. I’ve been working on it since then.”

The lyrics say: “All the rights you had yesterday are being taken away / And now you’re scared / You should be scared / ‘Cause everything I fought for in a dream long ago is gone.”

The music video also combined images and clips from several women’s marches.

In her statement accompanying the song’s release, Nicks emphasized how important it is to her and other women.

Nicks released a music video alongside her new single.

“It seemed like overnight people said, ‘What can we do about this as a collective force…’ For me, it was about writing a song,” Nicks said. “I often said to myself, ‘This may be the most important thing I’ve ever done.’ To advocate for the women of the United States and their daughters and granddaughters—and the men who love them. This is an anthem.

Nicks has been outspoken about her support of abortion rights, previously calling it “the fight of my generation.” In 2020, she spoke about her own abortion and said it was necessary to keep the band going in 1979.

“I should have walked away,” Nicks said. “And I knew that the music we were going to bring to the world would heal the hearts of so many people and make people so happy.”

Stevie Nicks told how she had an abortion in 1979.

“And I thought, you know what? This is really important,” she continued. “There is no other band in the world that has two main female singers and two main female writers. That was my world mission.”
