The Jets lead 15-6 after a controversial extra point attempt

The Jets jumped out to a 15-6 lead, with some minor controversy midway through the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Steelers.

New York scored a touchdown on a 1-yard pass from Aaron Rodgers to tight end Tyler Conklin. That happened after Jets running back Breece Hall let him run a few yards up the middle. Interim coach Jeff Ulbrich tried to prevent Hall from making it to the end zone, but he dropped the challenge flag before throwing it onto the field – so it was late and went unrecognized. It didn’t matter as the Jets scored.

Then, on the extra point, Minkah Fitzpatrick jumped over the players at the line of scrimmage to block Greg Zuerlein’s attempt. But Fitzpatrick was charged with leverage because he made contact with a Jets player while passing.

However, leverage is intended to be used when a player uses his opponent to physically move up. It didn’t appear to be what Fitzpatrick was doing, as the player is allowed to touch his opponent. Special teams coordinator Danny Smith was visibly upset by the flag call.

With the penalty, the Jets went for two and scored with a completed pass from Rodgers to receiver Garrett Wilson.

The official decision resulted in the Steelers trailing 15-6 instead of 13-6.

New York was able to score because Hall completed a short pass 57 yards to the 3-yard line. So far, he has four receptions for 93 yards to pace the offense and 12 rushing yards on six carries.
