The Jets give holdout DE Haason Reddick permission to seek a trade

The New York Jets have given low-profile defensive end Haason Reddick permission to pursue a trade, owner Woody Johnson said Tuesday at the NFL’s fall owners’ meetings.

The development comes a day after Reddick hired Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha as its new agents.

Rosenhaus, who was in attendance at Monday night’s game against the Buffalo Bills, met with general manager Joe Douglas before the game. Afterwards, Rosenhaus told ESPN that they had a “healthy dialogue.”

The 30-year-old Reddick, acquired in a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles on March 29, is the NFL’s last remaining holdout. The saga took a strange turn last week when CAA fired him as a client. CAA and the Jets held discussions about renegotiating the contract, but Reddick apparently refused to budge on his desire for a long-term contract extension.

Reddick has missed all team events since the trade, forfeiting about $4.7 million in game checks and racking up another $5 million in NFL-mandated fines.

Reddick had previously requested a trade, but Jets general manager Joe Douglas rejected that request.

The Jets acquired him with one year remaining on his contract and a non-guaranteed base salary of $14.25 million. Reddick, who had 50.5 sacks over the last four seasons, demanded a long-term contract that would suit top pass rushers. The Eagles decided to trade him instead of paying him.

The Jets offered an extension at the time of the trade, but it was quickly rejected. According to the team, Reddick agreed to play under his existing contract at that time. Reddick apparently felt he was being promised a long-term extension and therefore did not report to offseason events or training camp.

After losing pass rusher Bryce Huff to the Eagles in free agency, the Jets traded for Reddick and sent the Eagles a conditional 2026 third-round pick. If Reddick is not traded and does not report by Week 13, he will receive no credit for the season and his contract expires, meaning the Jets would retain his rights through 2025 instead of him becoming a free agent.
