The iPhone 17 Air is for those who pay for a cool iPhone that doesn’t beat the Pro line

When speculation first surfaced in May about a new phone to replace the iPhone Plus model, there was a bit of excitement among power users. The excitement grew even more when speculation began that the phone, now called the iPhone Air by everyone except Apple, would be more expensive than the top-of-the-line Pro Max. This suggested to many that it would be an incredibly high-spec, incredibly thin device.

The iPhone 17 Air needs to attract buyers with its design, not its performance… or its price tag

But just as quickly as the rumors raised hopes, they were dashed, as if the hopes of iPhone power users had been drawn above the nail barriers that police officers use to slow down a pursuing vehicle. In this case, a chart posted on “X” by leaker Ice Universe was the catalyst, as it allegedly showed the specifications of all iPhone 17 models, including the model that is now expected to be called the iPhone 17 Air.

The specs were nothing special, as the phone will reportedly have a 6.65-inch OLED panel with ProMotion and a dynamic refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz, depending on the content being displayed. That’s positive, although rumors have suggested that all four iPhone 17 models will have a ProMotion display. But we can immediately tell that the phone will be powered by the simple A19 Application Processor (AP). The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are both powered by the more powerful A19 Pro AP.

While the iPhone 17 Pro models will come with 12GB of RAM, the highest amount of memory ever put in an iPhone, the iPhone 17 Air will come with 8GB, the minimum amount of memory supported by Apple Intelligence. It is speculated that the phone will have a rear camera in the top center of the back. The starting price of $1,299 is $100 higher than the expected starting price of the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman gave his readers an example of how he thinks Apple will market the iPhone in his weekly newsletter. He sees Apple positioning the device as a “more elegant” model than the base iPhone 17, but for those who don’t need “the power, screen size or cameras of a Pro model.” The only problem with this is that the iPhone 17 Air has a higher price than the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Gurman expects iPhone shipments to increase in 2025 thanks to the new iPhone SE 4 and iPhone 17 Air

And here comes the part that makes me wonder what Tim Cook is eating these days. For that extra $100, you can buy something that, as Gurman puts it, looks cooler and still has the specs of a regular iPhone. I don’t know about you or Mark, but I buy my phones based on the performance I need, not because they look pretty. You may remember Motorola making the same argument when it promoted the first DROID in 2009. Motorola called the iPhone a “beauty pageant queen with a tiara and no digital savvy.”
Gurman expects the redesigned iPhone SE 4 (which he says will be based on the iPhone 14) and iPhone 17 Air to help the iPhone grow in 2025. He says the iPhone Air will prove more popular than the iPhone mini and iPhone Plus models. I’m not from Kansas, but Apple needs to show me how cool the new model will be before I make any predictions about how well it will sell.
There is now less than a month until the iPhone 16 series is supposedly unveiled on September 10. The latest rumors suggest that pre-orders will begin on September 13 and the new phones are expected to launch on Friday, September 20.
