The guards show off their skills after taking the gut punch from the Yankees

CLEVELAND – The Guardians showed the Yankees they don’t have a glass jaw.

MLB’s best closer, Emmanuel Clase, imploded in the eighth inning, and the Guardians still rallied together on Thursday to save their season in Game 3 of the ALCS, with a game-winning, two-out, two-run home run in the ninth inning, then a two-out, two-run, walk-off home run in the 10th inning of a 7-5 win over the Yankees.

“That’s exactly who we are,” said manager Stephen Vogt. “We never gave up. We got hit pretty hard there in the eighth round, and our guys worked really hard for the guy (Clase) who has carried us all year.”

If you thought the pesky Guardians were nothing more than a nuisance on the Yankees’ path to the World Series, like a swarm of mosquitoes known to invade Progressive Field, think again.

The home runs by Jhonkensy Noel that tied the game and David Fry that won it – the answer to the Yankees’ back-to-back tie and the go-ahead homers by Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton against Clase – showed real power.

“We got punched in the mouth by the best pitcher in baseball, Emmanuel Clase,” Fry said.

“You just give him the ball and we don’t even watch the game. I feel like we’re talking because we know the game is over. We were obviously shaken up, but it was just like, you know what, it’s time to give him a break.”

Instead of being on the verge of elimination on Friday, the Guardians are now dreaming big again.

“I can’t deny that it’s a very exciting moment, but at the same time it’s like – I’m not trying to be stubborn or arrogant – I’m trying to downplay it,” Noel said. “The goal is to get to the World Series. When we get to that point, we’ll be a little more celebratory.”

While the Yankees continued to encounter inexplicable outs on the bases, the Guardians flashed a Gold Glove-caliber defense that continued to level the playing field.

With the score tied in the top of the 10th, second baseman Andrés Giménez moved wide left to stab a ground ball, spun and threw a rebound to first baseman Josh Naylor, who kept his foot on the ball, to retire Jazz Chisholm Jr.

In this way, the Yankees went from potential runners on first and second — or first and third — with one out to having a lower percentage chance of scoring.

When the score wasn’t tied, Fry made sure there was no 11th inning.

“Andrés Giménez is the best infielder in the world,” said Vogt. “He was and will be. He makes plays that inspire us every day.”

The ACLS has been extended for at least another day because the Guardians have proven they can take a beating.
