A look at the good, the bad and the ugly for the Georgia Bulldogs in their win over Mississippi State.

Georgia defeated Mississippi State on Saturday by a final score of 41-31 and there was a lot to talk about after the team’s performance. Georgia was ahead 34-10 at one point in the football game, but Mississippi State began to claw its way back into the game. Georgia scored another touchdown late in the game, but a response from Mississippi State soon gave Georgia a 10-point win. With that said, here’s the good, the bad and the ugly from Saturday’s performance.

The good: Offensive performance

Georgia has been looking for a strong offensive performance all game long this season, and they did just that on Saturday. A total of 41 points were scored, Carson Beck threw 459 yards, 3 touchdowns and 75% of his passes. Both Arian Smith and Dillon Bells had explosive plays in the passing game and Anthony Evans also had a 52-yard run. Aside from an interception in the end zone, the offense looked solid. Eleven Bulldogs had one reception and Trevor Etienne and true freshman Nate Frazier both had at least 10 carries on the day. Still, it may not be the cleanest day, but you will always get 41 points from your offense.

The Bad: Poorly timed penalties

No one expects a team to go an entire game without committing a penalty, but the timing of those penalties is crucial. Etienne had a 20-yard touchdown run that was rejected for holding, Chris Cole was called for pass interference on 3rd-and-8, which extended the drive for Mississippi State and resulted in a touchdown on 3rd-and-10. Chaz Chambliss had a sack negated because of a face mask and on 3rd-and-10, Damon Wilson was called for tackling the passer on an incomplete pass, extending the drive. There were several instances where Georgia should have left the field and forced a punt, but instead Mississippi State was given another chance to extend the drive and turn it into points.

The Ugly: Pass Defense

It was arguably the Georgia pass defense’s worst performance on Saturday. The secondary was caught with his eyes in the backfield, sinking the secondary as Mississippi State threw it over the goal line for a touchdown. In a goal-line situation, the running back was left uncovered for a wide-open touchdown and there were several deep shots converted to Georgia Saturday. Georgia’s defense has always been good at limiting explosives and playing solid football, but that wasn’t the case on Saturday.
