The former Oregon Ducks star could be getting his first NFL start

Bucky Irving has quickly become a fan favorite with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and many fans wish the backup was the team’s running back.

These fans could get their wish on Sunday.

The rookie, the team’s leading rusher after five games, could make his first career start when the Buccaneers face the New Orleans Saints in a key NFC South matchup.

Rachaad White, who has started the first five games at running back, has a sprained ankle and was listed as doubtful on the Buccaneers’ injury report Saturday. White was able to practice on a limited basis on Wednesday, but did not practice at all on Thursday or Friday and will be a decision during the game.

Irving is the team’s leading rusher with 247 yards on 44 carries, averaging 5.6 yards per carry, which ranks fifth in the NFL among running backs with 40 or more carries this season. White rushed for 187 yards on 51 carries, a 3.6-yard average.

Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles continues to rotate the two fullbacks despite Irving’s better per-carry average and more explosive style. Bowles has suggested that White is a better receiver out of the backfield and a better pass protector.

White could play, but it’s likely he won’t be at full strength and Irving could get the bulk of the carries during the game.
