The Florida Finns thrive as the Panthers defeat the Stars 6-4 in the NHL Global Series

The Florida Panthers looked right at home in Finland.

Florida extended its road winning streak to six games, defeating the Dallas Stars 6-4 in the first of two NHL Global Series games in Tampere, Finland.

The Panthers’ squad includes four Finnish players: Sasha Barkov, Anton Lundell, Eetu Luostarinen and Niko Mikkola.

Barkov played a big role in Florida’s fast start, getting an assist on Evan Rodrigues’ goal just 28 seconds into the game.

Rodrigues returned the favor about seven minutes later by sending a cross-ice pass to Barkov, which the Finnish star pushed past Jake Oettinger’s glove to give the Cats a 2-0 lead.

Tyler Seguin got the Stars on the scoreboard midway through the first period from a spot few people can score from.

Seguin took a shot from below the goal line, inside the trapezoid where goaltenders are not allowed to touch the puck, and the shot went right off Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky’s infield and into the net.

A late Panthers power play led to the Cats’ third goal, courtesy of another Finn from Florida.

This time it was Anton Lundell from Hensinki. He deflected another Ekblad point shot past Oettinger to give the Panthers a 3-1 lead.

Esa Lindell, one of the Stars’ Finnish players, brought Dallas back within 92 seconds of the second period. A Stars power play a few minutes later threatened to swing the momentum significantly in Dallas’ favor, but Sam Reinhart made sure of that by scoring the equalizer with a shorthanded goal.

Rookie Mackie Samoskevich scored for the second time in three games early in the third to give Florida a 5-2 lead by scoring once on a puck that had been thrown into the Stars zone, surprising Oettinger.

Dallas scored two goals in the final minutes that will likely stick in the Cats’ minds between this game and Saturday’s matchup.

On to game two of the NHL Global Series.

QUICK THOUGHTS

Rodrigues finished the game with a goal and an assist, his first points since the third game of the season.

There have been 12 games this season and Reinhart has scored multiple points in half of them. He’s up to nine goals and 19 points this year.

Reinhart has now also scored three shorthanded goals this season. Again in 12 games.

Barkov has six points in the two games he has played since returning after an eight-game absence. Against Dallas he scored one goal and three assists.

Aaron Ekblad matched his season tally with three assists on Friday.

Bennett has scored in six straight games after receiving an assist, but his scoring streak ended after five games.

Lundell also stayed hot and scored his sixth goal of the season. He has now scored four points in a row and has 13 points this year.

Florida improved to 5-0 when it led after the first period and to 6-0 when it led after two periods.
