“The Crow” was brutally panned by the original director after it flopped at the box office

Director Alex Proyas, who directed the 1994 adaptation of The Crowcontinues his criticism of the new reboot. Rupert Sanders’ new interpretation of James O’Barr’s original story, which is now in theaters, flopped at the box office, which Proyas apparently enjoyed.

On Facebook, Proyas shared a message in which he directly addressed the low box office figures of The Crow. The new film landed at number 8 on the US box office charts and grossed $4.6 million in its first weekend. This is not good news for Lionsgate, considering the film has a budget of $50 million and additional marketing costs. In his response, Proyas first noted: “Wow. The box office is a bloodbath.” The director then joked that he was wrong in his initial assessment that the reboot was nothing more than a “rip-off.”

As Proyas said: “I thought the remake was a cynical money-making scheme. It seems there is not much money to be had.” Proyas shared a meme shortly afterwards with the content: “Marked as “Safe from view” CROW 2024 Today.

I thought the remake was a cynical rip-off. It seems like there isn’t much money to be made.

This follows recent comments from Proyas about the negative reception of the new film. In a previous online post, he wrote: “Wow. The reviews are brutal.” When the film was still in production, Proyas had also reacted to early images of the main characters by calling Bill Skarsgard’s Eric “silly.” The filmmaker also joked that Eric was having “a bad hair day,” although he clarified that this was just his opinion.

“To all of you who are yelling at me for making a joke about a haircut – why do you care what I think?” Proyas said. “What does it matter? When your enjoyment of a movie can be so easily ruined by a person you don’t even know, isn’t that kind of sad? If you’re looking forward to it, go see it – I don’t want to take away anyone’s joy. God knows we need all the joy we can get in life right now.”

The actors of The Crow have criticized the new film

Others involved in the 1994 film aren’t thrilled with the remake. Rochelle Davis, who played Sarah in the classic adaptation, said in Proyas’ Facebook post that the bad reviews were “well deserved.” Original Shelly actress Sofia Shinas recently told TMZ that she “completely understands why the film could flop,” and said reimagining the character Eric Draven would do Brandon Lee’s legacy a disservice.

“People love Brandon in the original movie… it’s hard to imagine how his family and his fiancée must feel knowing that their loved one gave his life and was not willing to do that movie, and yet now, years later, someone else is trying to overshadow that role,” she said.

The Crow is in cinemas.
