The Chiefs’ starter gets off fine as the NFL imposes fines ahead of Week 8

Every Saturday, the league office issues fines to players who were involved in incidents and violations the week before. This week a Chiefs player received one from the NFL.

Chiefs safety Bryan Cook was involved in a fight with 49ers star Trent Williams in Week 7. Late in the fourth quarter, Cook fired a cheap shot at Williams, and the veteran left tackle retaliated with a hit that resulted in his ejection. On Saturday, Williams was fined $11,817.00 while Cook received a bill for $8,442.64.

Considering Cook’s punch triggered the interaction, it’s safe to say the 25-year-old defender got off lightly with a small fine.

The oddly specific amount Cook received as a fine is certainly confusing. Williams received a fine for his strike, which was somewhat consistent with NFL precedent. It’s difficult to understand why the Chiefs’ starter received less.

This incident and the light punishment could potentially set a dangerous precedent. It could allow players to take cheap shots after the game gets out of hand. This results in a 15-yard penalty during the game, but that doesn’t matter in garbage time anyway.

Football is a contact sport and things are inevitably physical on the field. However, when blows to the head occur, the league must take stricter action. For both Williams and Cook, a suspension or significantly larger fines would have been more appropriate.

Williams and Cook weren’t the only players involved in an altercation in Week 7. 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir was also fined $11,817 for unnecessary roughness, and Chiefs wide receiver Skyy Moore was fined $9,356.83 for his actions on the same play.
