Bonus features for Inside Out 2

  • New emotions – With Riley’s impending puberty, the story of Inside Out 2 always suggested there would be a new set of emotions complicating Riley’s world – and upsetting Joy’s hard-won stability. But what exactly those new emotions might be was a big question mark. Conjuring the new emotions into Riley’s head was a fun exploration of a teenager’s changing mindset, and was also influenced by some of the discarded scenes and characters from the original film. In this documentary, we discuss the process of creating Fear, Embarrassment, Boredom and Envy – from narrowing them down from a long list of possible emotions to designing, animating and voicing these new, hilarious and oddly recognizable characters.

  • Open the safe – In a sort of visual commentary, a group of core creatives observe and discuss “The Vault” scene. As they pause and move on – and reference various IP versions of the scene – we learn about the inspiration for Riley’s repressed memories like Bloofy and Lance Slashblade, the development of the scene in story, and the technical challenges of creating 2D characters that exist in the CG world of Riley’s head.

  • Deleted Scenes
    • Cold opening – In this alternate beginning, Riley, now 13, awkwardly stumbles through an original song she wrote for a school audition.
    • Broken joy – After being unable to operate the console for a short time, Joy is worried that it might malfunction.
    • Pool Party – After Riley tries too hard to be funny at an older teenager’s party – resulting in extreme embarrassment – her “fear” turns into “self-hatred,” which then crowds out our hero’s emotions from HQ.
    • Puberty Park – After seeing their faces on wanted posters, Joy and the other villain emotions race through a puberty-themed amusement park while being pursued by brainwashing cops.
    • Shame spiral – During a lockdown with some cool, older girls, Riley and his friends play a game of Never Have I Ever that goes a little too far – and causes chaos in Riley’s head.
