The best smartphone deals for August 2024

  • Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra at AT&T: AT&T
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 at Samsung: Samsung
  • Google Pixel 8a on AT&T: AT&T
  • Google Pixel 9 Pro XL at AT&T: AT&T
  • Google Pixel 8 Pro on Mint Mobile: Mint Mobile
  • Apple iPhone 15 on Verizon: Verizon

Whether as a work device for calls in the office or on the go, or as a retro flip phone for a casual chat with a customer, mobile phones are an indispensable device for most people today. If you’re looking for a new smartphone, these great deals this month are just the thing for you.

In August, Google opened pre-orders for the Pixel 9 series. We’ve added special offers for new and existing AT&T customers.

Buying a phone can be more complicated than buying other hardware because of carrier plans. A carrier might offer low-cost upgrades or unlimited plans for business, while an unlocked or prepaid phone will work independently of a carrier. For business, you’re likely to have a carrier and perhaps an unlimited plan, so we’ve easily gone with the carrier’s offers, but you’ll need to double-check if these apply to your plan. If they do, you can often get a new phone as part of a free upgrade, or get on a payment plan that rolls the cost of the phone into the cost of the data over a couple of years.

When evaluating the offers to determine the five best, we took into account the amount of the discount, the quality of the product and its potential uses for companies, from corporations to freelancers. We tried to offer a variety of brands because you probably already have a preference for Apple, Android, Google and something else.

Best smartphone deals for August 2024: comparison table

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra on AT&T

Samsung S24 Ultra
Image: AT&T

Price: $299.99 with trade-in and unlimited plan.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra can run Google’s generative AI, such as the Imagen 2 photo editor, and our reviewer called that model “incredible” earlier this year. Existing AT&T customers can trade in their existing phone and upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra with a valid unlimited plan to get up to $1,000 off the $1,299.99 retail price. This kind of benefit isn’t uncommon among wireless carriers, but the size of this discount puts you at a very reasonable $8.34 per month if you pay for this phone on installment plan. If you know you like the Galaxy and want to upgrade to the newest and higher-end version, this is a great deal that can save you a thousand dollars.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 at Samsung

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE

Price: $499.99 with maximum trade-in.

This deal is for an unlocked phone, so you can pair it with any carrier. Samsung is offering $490 off the trendy flip phone if you trade in your older smartphone. If you’re specifically trading in a relatively new Galaxy S24, the discount is $490, with older devices or devices from other brands reducing the discount from there. Such is the nature of smartphone deals: They often come with very specific fine print attached. But if you have the perfect specs for this deal, you’ll get a charming and powerful phone in return.

The Galaxy Z Flip5 runs Android 13 including AI features, and its small size is good for business trips or back-to-back meetings, but keep in mind that the hinge is the part that’s likely to wear out first.

Sometimes you can find more Flip5 deals on Amazon or bigger discounts from wireless carriers, but some of these require setting up a new line, which isn’t convenient.

Google Pixel 8a at AT&T

AT&T is offering a $5.99 per month deal on Google’s 2024 Pixel 8a, a truly remarkable price. The catch: You must sign up for a qualifying AT&T unlimited plan or already have one, and the savings are paid out over 36 months, so you’ll need to plan on keeping this phone for 36 months and committing to AT&T. Still, that’s a very impressive price per month. AT&T also offers:

  • Google Pixel Buds for free when you buy this or any other Pixel phone from them until September 5th.
  • $100 off Ray Ban Meta Smart Glasses with purchase of other connected device and qualified plans.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL on AT&T

Pixels 9

With the opening of pre-orders for its next smartphone at the Made by Google event last week, the Pixel 9 deals have begun. AT&T is offering this current-generation phone for free when you trade in “a Google Pixel smartphone from any year and in any condition, or an eligible smartphone with a trade-in value of $35 or more.” The Google Pixel 9 is packed with AI features and includes 256GB of storage (or 512GB, which you can get for the same price as part of the deal). This deal is available to people with new or existing AT&T unlimited cellular plans.

Verizon is also sweetening its Pixel 9s offering with various pre-order offers, including up to $800 off.

Google Pixel 8 Pro at Mint Mobile

Price: 559 US dollars.

Mint Mobile, now a subsidiary of T-Mobile US, offers prepaid phone plans via an eSIM, including six free months for new customers. If you want this plan type, Mint Mobile is offering a $440 discount on the Google Pixel 8 Pro.

Apple iPhone 15 at Verizon

Apple iPhone 15

Price: Free with Verizon Unlimited Plus or Unlimited Ultimate and 36-month contract.

Verizon is offering $829.99 off the current-generation iPhone 15, which means the phone is free compared to the retail price of $799. You’ll need to pay for Verizon’s Unlimited Plus or Unlimited Ultimate plan, and the savings will be paid out as a monthly credit for 36 months. The iPhone 15 has good photo editing features, such as editing backgrounds that can be used for work. Plus, it will be compatible with iOS 18 when the new operating system comes out this fall. However, the iPhone 15 won’t be able to use Apple Intelligence.
