The Bears are likely to face Commanders QB Jayden Daniels

The battle between No. 1 and No. 2 appears to be back on for now, if ESPN’s Adam Schefter is correct.

Citing an unnamed team official, Schefter reported Sunday that all signs point to Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels playing against the Bears on Sunday at 3:25 p.m.

Daniels, the second pick of this year’s draft, would then get a chance to face the No. 1 pick, Bears QB Caleb Williams.

Schefter quoted the team official as saying about Daniels: “He’s a tough guy.”

Daniels suffered a rib injury and left Washington’s win last week against Carolina after 10 games. He didn’t practice on Wednesday or Thursday and then completed a workout on Friday that coach Dan Quinn described as intense. Quinn told reporters in Washington that Daniels “really pushed it” in practice.

However, when the team’s injury report came out, Daniels was listed as questionable and he had only played a limited practice session.

Typically limited practice is the individual skills portion of training and stretching, and sometimes it involves a small number, if any, of team games.

So the spirit seemed to be right, but if Daniels plays, it will be a significant improvement in athletic ability and a problem for the Bears in open-field running situations. Daniels also has the highest completion rate in the league at 75.6%. The combination of accurate passing and Daniels’ 372 yards rushing on 66 scrambles has helped Washington lead the NFL in time of possession. His passer rating is 107.0.

Daniels is 127 of 168 for 1,410 yards with six TD passes and two interceptions.

Williams, the first overall pick, is 130 of 199 for 1,317 yards with nine touchdown passes and five interceptions, for a passer rating of 88.7.

The Bears’ defense has maintained that it doesn’t matter whether Daniels or the veteran Marcus Mariota plays against them. Although Mariota is highly mobile, she is not the breakaway threat that Daniels is. Last week in a win, Mariota ran 11 times for just 34 yards.

“Honestly, I don’t care,” Bears edge rusher Montez Sweat said. “Both are good on their feet and both can throw the ball out of the pocket, so it won’t make a difference.”

However, Sweat saw something about Daniels in the film.

“I noticed he likes to go right and throw, in fact he likes to pass while he runs,” Sweat said. “But I feel like he’s a very dynamic guy. He can go to either side and throw the ball. But yeah, he’s just a good quarterback.”

According to NFLGSIS.com, the Bears have given up 78 rushing yards to quarterbacks in six games, including 58 on scrambles.
