The Bachelorette Season 21: Jenn reveals unprecedented ending

Note: This story contains spoilers for the finale of the 21st season of “The Bachelorette”.

Season 21 of The Bachelorette has come to an end and Jenn Tran was right when she told audiences they would be shocked by the end of their love story.

After narrowing down her selection of suitors to two men based on fantasy suites – Devin Strader and Marcus Shoberg – the leading lady introduced her family to the men and was met with mixed reactions. Strader, who had already exchanged “I love yous” with Tran, was rejected because Tran’s brother gave him his blessing for the engagement, while Tran’s family – and Tran himself – expressed disappointment that Shoberg had not yet been able to tell Tran that he loved her.

Shoberg’s hesitation didn’t let Tran go, prompting her to visit him before their final date. She reminded him that the engagement was the next day and pressed him to say what he envisioned for his and/or her future. She explained that she felt like he wasn’t looking forward to a possible future with her. Shoberg said the prospect of the future scared him, but eventually told her that he loved her and didn’t want to give up on her.

While Tran admitted she had been waiting for those words, she said she had a sinking feeling in her stomach and took a few minutes to herself because she felt like she had been taken for granted and had invested too much time and energy for nothing in return. After she returned, Tran broke up with Shoberg, saying that what she felt in that moment was not what she wanted for her future.

The next day, Tran woke up and told host Jesse Palmer that she had no plans to have Strader propose to her, but would rather propose to him herself. Instead of watching the moment, however, Palmer interrupted the live finale to tell the audience that the proposal would not air until Tran spoke directly to the audience.

During the live portion of the finale, Tran revealed that she and Strader got engaged in Hawaii and walked away happy from each other, although everything felt different after returning to the mainland. Tran said Strader scaled back her future plans and felt “secondary” in his life. He said he would call and text her less and stop introducing her to his family.

The night before Tran and Strader were to reunite for a “happy couple” visit, Tran said Strader called off their engagement, saying he no longer loved her and regretted the engagement. Tran offered that they could just date for now, but he refused to meet her where she was and didn’t want to go to couples counseling. She said the last time they saw each other was over a month ago in July, and he’s avoided her texts and calls since then.

Strader was brought out and Tran prefaced their conversation by noting that it wouldn’t be significant since they had agreed to have such conversations off-camera. Tran listed several behaviors she found disrespectful — including following “The Bachelor” alumna Maria Georgas on Instagram and clubbing in New York City with “The Bachelorette” alumna Jeremy Simon — and called him out for not being open about his fears about getting engaged and having one foot out the door in their engagement. Tran said it breaks her heart to see his lies every Monday night.

Strader said he felt he was not living up to Tran’s standards and the growth he saw in her. He felt he was part of her “regression.”

ABC then aired their proposal, where Tran proposed to Strader, who then proposed to her. Tran said during the live finale that she doesn’t regret proposing to Strader, but knows she deserves a man who will keep his promises instead of leaving her empty-handed.

The finale of “The Bachelorette” will stream on Hulu starting Wednesday.
