It is common knowledge in the NFL that you can’t talk nonsense in the media before a game because everyone is a professional and has a high level of play to be in the NFL.

New York Giants right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor didn’t pay attention to that before the Week 8 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Eluemunor, a veteran offensive lineman on his sixth team in eight seasons, declared that he wanted to stay on an island against star pass rusher TJ Watt and boldly proclaimed that he would get along with the All-Pro and future Hall of Famer .

By now you all know how that went. Watt finished the game with two sacks and had a crucial strip sack/fumble recovery with Eluemunor on this island in the fourth quarter.

“This island sank. There is no island anymore. It was washed up by Hurricane Watt,” Steelers captain and star defender Cameron Heyward said of Eluemunor vs. Watt on his podcast “Not Just Football with Cameron Heyward.” “And then Alex (Highsmith) got a sack there too. It’s not a good feeling when you poke the bear. I’m petty. I send him things in the group chat. I make sure he knows it, make sure he circles it. But it’s nice to see TJ just destroy that and make sure the kid knows, “Don’t call me out if you don’t want the smoke.”

“The last time they played each other, I think TJ had two sacks there. So he could be all for the competition. But shoot, you better be ready to perform in those moments.”

There’s a reason teams have been doubling and chipping Watts all season to give the right tackles as much help as possible. That’s because Watt is a game destroyer. He cannot be blocked one-on-one, and he has proven that time and time again throughout the season.

While he didn’t stay on an island often due to a coaching decision by New York head coach Brian Daboll against the Giants, Watt delivered when he was ultimately left on an island.

Late in the game, just a few plays after a Russell Wilson fumble gave the Giants the football deep in Pittsburgh territory, Watt saved the day. He beat Eluemunor around the corner and took the football away from QB Daniel Jones, getting the ball back and ultimately helping the Steelers win the game.

What makes it even more ironic is that the Giants shouldn’t leave Watt on an island in the game against Eluemunor either.

However, despite the plays Watt made, Eluemunor stated during an appearance on WFAN in New York that Watt did nothing against him the entire game. A day later, Watt was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Oops.

Hopefully Eluemunor hasn’t invested in this island. It’s now a sunk cost.
