Texas Tech Football to host non-conference opponent in 2026

The Texas Tech football program has filled a gap in its 2026 nonconference schedule with a game against Sam Houston State.

Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said he received the final contract on Friday. The 2026 schedule now calls for the Red Raiders to play at home against Abilene Christian on Sept. 5, play an away game at Oregon State on Sept. 12 and host Sam Houston State on Sept. 26.

Tech expects to play a conference game on Sept. 19, senior assistant athletic director Robert Giovannetti said Monday.

Tech and Colorado State mutually agreed earlier this year to cancel a two-game series in 2025 and 2026 without penalty, due to Hocutt’s desire to ensure the Red Raiders seven home games per year. In February, Tech reached an agreement with Kent State to play at Jones AT&T Stadium in 2025.

Because games are scheduled as close in advance as possible, Tech is paying guarantees of $1.5 million to Kent State and $1 million to Sam Houston State. Of the two dozen other non-conference games Tech has scheduled over the next decade, only one guarantee is more than $575,000.

“You’re seeing an escalation in the market,” Hocutt said, “and then there’s also a limited number of teams currently looking for games (for 2026), so the small time frame obviously escalates the market.”
