Texas remains No. 1 while Tennessee falls out of the top 10

The AP Top 25 for Week 8 has been released.

Texas retained its No. 1 overall ranking in this week’s poll after defeating No. 18 Oklahoma 34-3 in Dallas. The Longhorns will now prepare for the duel No. 5 Georgia this weekend in Austin. Texas and Georgia are once again the only SEC teams ranked in the top five.

Elsewhere in the SEC this weekend, Alabama and Tennessee both posted close home wins against South Carolina and Florida, respectively. Alabama remained in the top 10 at No. 7, but the Vols slipped three spots to No. 11.

LSU made a big jump from No. 13 to No. 8 this week after an overtime win over an Ole Miss team that is now ranked No. 18. The Tigers appear to be back in the running for a possible CFP spot, having won five straight since their loss to USC.

In the Big Ten, Oregon moved up to No. 2 this week, also receiving 6 first-place votes. The Ducks now have arguably the best win of any team in the country in 2024 when they defeated Ohio State at home on Saturday.

However, the Buckeyes remained in the top five at No. 4. A third Big Ten team, Penn State, also retained its top five status after beating USC on the road this week.

Indiana, Illinois and Michigan also retained their top 25 spots this week. Nebraska nearly cracked the top 25 this week, but ended up in the Votes Received category again.

It’s worth noting that both Army and Navy will be ranked in Week 8. Each of these military academies is undefeated so far this season.
