Teryl Austin won’t reveal matchup plans against Cowboys star WR CeeDee Lamb

The Pittsburgh Steelers defense was torched in Week 4 against the Indianapolis Colts. Not only were the Steelers hurt on the ground, but the Colts also had an impressive aerial attack. Anthony Richardson opened the game with a bomb toss against Michael Pittman Jr., and Joe Flacco also had success with the ball. This week her job won’t be any easier. Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is one of the best players in the NFL, but defensive coordinator Teryl Austin isn’t revealing exactly how the defense plans to defend him.

“(Porter) may have been in our ear,” he said of Porter guarding Lamb, via a team-provided transcript. “We’ll find out on Sunday.”

It sounds like Porter is asking for this assignment, but Austin isn’t sure he’ll give it to him. Right now, it looks like Porter may not be on Lamb for the entire game and the team could play some matchups.

The Cowboys will be without veteran receiver Brandin Cooks this week. That means Jalen Tolbert, a third-round pick in 2022, will most likely be their No. 2 receiver. Tolbert recorded just 22 catches for 268 yards and two touchdowns last year.

The rest of the Cowboys’ wide receivers are equally unproven. Lamb is their biggest threat. So if the Steelers can take him away, the Cowboys offense could grind to a halt. They haven’t had much success playing ball this year. It might be better not to put all the pressure on Porter to stop Lamb.

However, that may be easier said than done. Lamb has 20 catches for 316 yards and two touchdowns. Those numbers aren’t exactly eye-popping, but he still dominated every game this year. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is also one of the best in the NFL. They are a dynamic duo and will likely focus most of the attention on the Steelers’ defense.

Porter will likely continue to put pressure on Austin to shadow Lamb. He is a competitive player and he wants to prove that he is the best. To achieve that he has to beat the best, and Lamb is in that company. We’ll see on Sunday if Porter gets his wish. In any case, the goal should be to stop Lamb. If the Steelers can do that, they should win.
