Social media users were left both impressed and terrified after streaming a highly anticipated movie on Netflix.

Thriller ‘Woman of the Hour’ has received high praise from anxious fans who know the true story behind the new Anna Kendrick film.

The “Pitch Imperfect” film, in which Kendrick portrays “Dating Game” contestant Cheryl Bradshaw, who almost went on a date with serial killer Rodney Alcala, also made viewers reflect on his crimes.

“As a woman, this movie really captured a lot of legitimate fears and now I’m just upset,” the X user added.

Another X user admitted, a “hard time” as he watched the first scene and insisted that everyone trust their gut before meeting someone.

Several other spectators expressed their excitement to watch the film, and at least five Netflix streamers dubbed the day “Woman of the Hour Day.”

They also praised Kendrick’s direction, with one person writing that they were “excited to see whatever she directs next.”

Despite the widespread praise, not all streamers were thrilled with “Woman of the Hour.” One Reddit user even claimed that the “boring” film “would have done better in 1997.”

“Any film that goes straight to Netflix without even a token theatrical release should be viewed with suspicion,” one Reddit user wrote in a post this morning.

One person asked if “Woman of the Hour” was a rip-off of “Late Night with the Devil,” and another was stunned to note that it was “not a Lifetime movie.”

“Woman of the Hour” focuses on Bradshaw (Kendrick) – a woman from California trying to break into the entertainment industry.

Bradshaw’s journey leads her to become a contestant on an episode of “The Dating Game” in 1978, starring Alcala.

She asked questions and chatted with all three contestants before deciding on a date with Alcala.

What Bradshaw didn’t know was Alcala’s troubling past and the heinous murders he committed before his appearance on the series.

The hopeful bachelorette ended up getting a weird vibe from Alcala and ultimately refused to go on a date with him.

Alcala’s crime spree began years before he killed his alleged first murder victim in 1971.

While in the Army in the 1960s, he attacked several young women and almost killed eight-year-old Tali Shapiro in 1968.

Alcala evaded law enforcement and murdered at least four other women before appearing on The Dating Game.

It took years for law enforcement to finally arrest the “Dating Game” killer in 1979, but he had already murdered Jill Parenteau and 12-year-old Robin Samsoe before they arrested him.

He was ultimately linked to eight murders, but law enforcement believes the number of his victims is much higher.

Alcala died of natural causes on death row in 2021 and Bradshaw is apparently living a quiet life after moving away from California.

Critics who have seen the film since its Netflix debut have praised the film, and its Tomatometer rose as high as 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

It also scared them a little, with one reviewer insisting that it was “alternately entertaining and unsettling.”

“More a social commentary than a pulpy thriller, the film spends more listening to the women who were long ignored – those who suspected him, those who trusted him, those who reported him – than ogling his crimes,” wrote a critic for Empire.

“You don’t have to see evil done to a woman to feel her suffering.”

“Woman of the Hour will certainly have many looking up this strange story,” wrote an Associated Press critic.

“But Kendrick’s achievement is to capture, from a woman’s perspective, how difficult it can be to pick out a serial killer from an all-male cast.”
