    ‘Terrifier 3’ Director Talks Bloody Murders and a Wild Ending (Spoilers)

    Spoiler alert! The following article discusses important plot points and the ending of “Terrifier 3”. So be careful if you haven’t seen it yet.

    “Terrifier 3” lives up to the popular horror franchise’s penchant for gory kills with its lead actor Art the Clown, but also offers a bit more backstory and a literal cliffhanger.

    Set five years after 2022’s “Terrifier 2,” the holiday-themed threequel follows heroine Sienna Shaw (Lauren LaVera) as she is released from a mental health facility to spend time with her aunt and uncle. However, she still suffers from psychological problems due to her last encounter with the demonically overpowered Art, in which this angelic warrior rose from the dead thanks to a magical sword and severed his head. He got better and is now back in Miles County – wearing a Santa suit and working with Victoria (Samantha Scaffidi), a disfigured survivor from the first “Terrifier” who is now possessed by an evil entity, to save Sienna to hunt. Of course, he leaves a trail of blood and dismemberments behind.

    Writer/director Damien Leone introduces Sienna’s father Michael (Jason Patric), seen in flashbacks with his young daughter to add depth to her warrior angel side, and references the larger mythology. That was one of the “big polarizing aspects” of the last film and “a lot of people just felt like there were so many unanswered questions,” Leone says. “By nature I approach the whole thing more like a miniseries. These are not isolated cases. So it’s just a matter of how much information I can squeeze in before I get to the final confrontation with Art and Sienna that I envisioned.”

    Leone explains the ending of “Terrifier 3”, a new addition to the franchise’s history and why there is no post-credits scene.

    What happens at the end of “Terrifier 3”?

    In the final act, Victoria and Art confront Sienna at her family’s house. They murder her aunt and uncle, threaten young cousin Gabbie (Antonella Rose), and uncover the decapitated skull of Sienna’s younger brother Jonathan (Elliott Fullam), who was apparently killed off-screen. As Victoria attempts to possess her, Sienna grabs her magical sword, slits Art’s throat, and stabs Victoria deep with it. This opens a chasm to hell in the living room and Gabbie has to fight for her survival. Sienna can’t save her because she falls, the pit closes and Art escapes the city on a bus.

    Putting Sienna in another precarious situation “really raises her stakes, especially because we’ve opened the door to the supernatural, to heaven and hell and all these wonderful mythical themes,” says Leone, who confirmed that a fourth “Terrifier” appears. “I think now she has to find a way to save Gabbie. And what’s at stake other than actually sending Sienna to hell?”

    What’s the biggest kill in the new “Terrifier”?

    Leone ups Art’s already impressive murder game in the third film with the brutal killing of a family in the bloody opening and a memorable shower massacre in which a college guy is brutally sawed in half butt-first. Some of the ultra-violence seems cartoonish due to Art’s humorous mannerisms, but even though the horror villain isn’t known for killing children, there are a few scenes that break this unwritten rule, including one involving a Santa Claus meeting at a mall the air blows up. Welcome area full of children and parents.

    While he often brings levity to the “Terrifier” film, “you can fall into the trap where no one is afraid of Art the Clown anymore,” Leone says. The character is “sadistic and cruel and evil and frightening” and the filmmaker says he has to “stay true to him, no matter how despicable the scene may be.” So if I go to that really dark place, that’s it.” What matters is that I approach this in perhaps the most gentle and responsible way possible.

    “We deal with a lot of taboo topics,” adds Leone. “The way it is implemented could be very off-putting and essentially alienate the entire audience. This is a disservice to the casual horror film fan (and) to Art the Clown as a character, because in my opinion he has more mass appeal than just a niche splatter fest.”

    Does “Terrifier 3” have a post-credits scene?

    Leone reports that some screenings may show a music video for Ice Nine Kills’ new film song “A Work of Art” after the credits, but there will be no additional scene of the Marvel variety. In fact, he doesn’t like them, although Leone included one in “Terrifier 2,” where, after Sienna cut off Art’s head in the climax, there was a post-credits sequence showing Victoria in an insane asylum giving birth to her child’s gruesome head of the villain.

    “I just wanted to give Sienna and Jonathan a moment to breathe and revel in victory for a moment rather than just settling into, well, they just killed Art the Clown and now he’s instantly reborn,” Leone says.

    What is the most important piece of mythology revealed in “Terrifier 3”?

    In a letter that Jonathan writes to Sienna, Leone introduces some important insights that connect Sienna and art. It states that when a demon chooses a vessel to act as a bridge between worlds – also called Art the Clown – a counterpart from the forces of good – in this case Sienna – must be appointed to fight it and kill it prevent the demon from gaining too much power.

    “This basically gives you all the information you need to know about this franchise, especially with the supernatural aspect,” Leone says. That said, “I still see people saying they don’t know what’s going on. What matters is that they need to know exactly who and why Art the Clown was a serial killer in the first place, and I think until I reveal that information I’ll constantly be faced with the question, “This movie did it.” no action.’ ”
