Tell Me Lies Season 3 Questions Answered After Surprising Breakups

The cast and crew of Tell Me Lies answer burning questions ahead of the season
Josh Stringer/Hulu

The Tell me lies The Season 2 finale featured everything from plot twists to deaths to breakups – but what does that mean for Season 3?

Based on the novel of the same name by Carola Lovering, Tell me lies follows the chaotic relationship between college student Lucy (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen (Jackson White). Their troubled, on-again, off-again romance ultimately lasts eight years – and everyone around them is affected by Lucy and Stephen’s ups and downs.

Season 2, which premiered in August, picked up months after Stephen surprised Lucy by ending their toxic relationship. This separation is just the beginning, because by the end of their second year of college they are a couple again. In the present day, Stephen and Lucy’s paths cross again and they have sex, although both are in serious relationships with other people.

However, Stephen has something up his sleeve because it turns out he knew Evan (Branden Cook) and Lucy met in college. Although he didn’t seem to care at the time, he waited until Evan’s wedding to Lucy’s friend Bree (Cat Missal) to blow everything up. There are also Wrigleys (Spencer House) storyline that ended in tragedy after he was finally reunited with Drew (Benjamin Wadsworth) in the season two finale – only to have his stepbrother accidentally die of an overdose.

As networks make decisions about their programming, Us Weekly will continue to track what has been renewed and what TV shows have been canceled. Slow Horses was the first series to receive a renewal in 2024. In early January, Apple TV+ picked up the series for a fifth season, which will be based on Mick (…).

Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer spoke with Us weekly about how the writers’ room juggles storylines that span two timelines.

“I always had a sense of where they are in 2015, what dynamics they have and what secrets each one holds. If you at least know what people know and don’t know, you have a lot of leeway,” she noted. “But the way we constructed it is we definitely brought the 2008 storyline into the room first. We kind of planned the whole season and then did 2015 as a separate thing.”

Oppenheimer continued, “However, I knew where I wanted to end the 2015 season. I knew where I had to get to.”

Was killing Drew always the plan?

After a year of estrangement, Drew returned to Wrigley’s life. However, it didn’t last long as their evening took a turn when Drew mixed alcohol with some pills Wrigley gave him and ended up dying of an overdose.

“It’s funny because I originally thought Drew was going to die at the end of the first season. “That was my plan from the beginning,” Oppenheimer revealed Us. “It just didn’t work out that way, so I decided to leave it open. But I knew he had to die at some point, which was so sad because Ben is so lovely and such a good actor.”

Oppenheimer actually considered changing the direction of the story, adding, “At the beginning of the second season I asked myself, ‘Does he have to die?’ Could we bring him back for more?’ But there was no way to include this story because he had been expelled from school. It was one of those sad things that had to happen.”

House, meanwhile, didn’t immediately know where Wrigley would go.

“I thought Drew was going to die – I think we all did – but they kept that from me for a while,” he admitted Us. “Then when I found out how he dies, that affected the storyline in 2015. Just the way we talked about (Wrigley) being drunk is a little darker and has a lot more weight.”

Although Drew’s death was an accident, House said he saw Wrigley blame himself for the rest of his life, adding, “He’s actually killing him.” It’s not intentional. And people who work on the show will disagree with me, but Wrigley is in a bar with his brother. He gives him a pill he didn’t prescribe and it kills him. So he kills his brother. He doesn’t plan on doing it, but it’s something he’ll always carry with him for the rest of his life.”

Oppenheimer couldn’t reveal much about how Stephen alerting Bree to Evans and Lucy’s previous affair could potentially derail the wedding.

“I didn’t plan it, but I think everyone would probably like to see Bree get her revenge,” she teased. “Because she really got dirty from everyone. She deserves it and she probably wants it too.”

Season 2 showed Bree starting a relationship with a professor (Tom Ellis), which didn’t exactly end well. Bree then received calls from a mysterious person on her wedding day – but is it Oliver?

“I don’t know that these voicemails are from Oliver. That’s probably what people are thinking, but I think it’s probably someone more surprising,” Oppenheimer told Us.

Meanwhile, Missal added in a separate interview Us“It’s a bit juicy, isn’t it?” I’ll let people voice their theories and we’ll see how they turn out. It’s really exciting not knowing and being surprised by what’s happening.”

Ellis agreed with his co-star that viewers will have to wait and see how the story unfolds.

While the audience – including Us – thought Diana (Alicia Crowder), doomed to always remain under Stephen’s spell, surprised everyone by laying the groundwork for their inevitable breakup.

“It was really interesting. I was like, “Okay, how should I play this?” There was never any discussion about whether Stephen might have an idea. It was like, ‘No, he really thinks she screwed this up.'” “The way I went about it was really challenging,” Crowder said Us. “But the way I feel like I cracked it was through the sadness and brokenness of failing the LSAT — it was really the sadness and brokenness of having to admit that failure. “

Diana had to come to terms with how “she had failed” Stephen before urging him to stop.

“Where we see her crying or upset, she is looking down on herself for failing to have a successful relationship,” Crowder noted. “It will be interesting. I’m curious to see if anyone predicts she’s lying about this.”

“After we get out of the spiral (with him), I would like to see a path in a positive direction. “We know how this ends,” House said Us in terms of the show’s current schedule, which doesn’t yet see much growth for Wrigley. “He has a little knowledge of everything that’s going on. It’s up to the writers, but I’d like to do something other than another spiral. I love doing it, but I’d like to see hope.”

The actor added: “Maybe in a 2015 storyline you would see if he’s doing better. But we don’t spend much time there either, so I don’t know how they’re going to do it. I’ll do my job as always and we’ll see how it goes.”
