Tanker truck accident leads to closure of Route 21 in Lawrence Township

LAWRENCE TWP. – A three-vehicle crash caused Route 21 at Forty Corners Road NW to be closed in both directions for more than a half hour Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Ambulances took two men to area hospitals, Lawrence Township Police Sergeant Dan Lockwood said.

Lockwood said shortly before 3:14 p.m., an 80-year-old man driving an SUV westbound on Forty Corners entered the east side of the intersection with Route 21. He failed to yield the right of way to a tanker truck traveling northbound on Route 21, preventing the truck from stopping in time to avoid a collision.

One or both of the vehicles then collided with another westbound car that was waiting in the median of Route 21 until traffic cleared so it could travel west across the southbound lanes of Route 21.

The 80-year-old man suffered broken ribs and a possible collapsed lung, Lockwood said. A fire department ambulance took him to Aultman Hospital, where he is expected to remain for the next few days. The sergeant said witnesses told police that the driver of the SUV apparently never stopped to look for vehicles traveling north on Route 21. He faces a charge of failure to yield. The man who was driving the car in the median was also injured, but his injury is described as non-life-threatening. An ambulance took him to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital.

The truck driver was not injured. He had no liquid in his tanker. Lockwood said there were no dangerous leaks.

Police said that due to the number of emergency vehicles that had to park at the scene of the accident, all lanes of Route 21 were closed for approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Vehicles had to be diverted around the accident site. Emergency crews then opened one lane in each direction. The accident site was cleared by around 5:30 p.m.
