The new format of the UEFA Champions League begins on Tuesday and will be a very different format to what UCL football lovers around the world are used to.

The Champions League is the second biggest and most glamorous football competition in the world after the FIFA World Cup.

Top football clubs from European countries take part in the tournament, which starts in September and ends in May next year.

This 2024/2025 season, UEFA will be making many changes to the Ogbonge competition and this article will inform you of what you can expect from the start of the tournament today.

36 teams instead of 32 and no groups

A total of 32 teams from Europe’s top teams will start in the Champions League and will be divided into eight groups of four teams each.

Each team in the group will play six matches, home and away. At the end of the day, the top two teams will qualify for the round of 16, the third placed teams will be relegated to the Europa League and the last teams in the group will be crowned.

But now nothing changes. With 36 groups, the tournament starts, but there are no groups.

The first phase of the competition will be played in league format, meaning each team will be promoted or relegated in the table depending on their performance.

Each team plays against eight different opponents – four home games and four away games. Typically a win is worth three points and a draw is worth one point.

After eight games, the teams were no longer there from number one to eight on the tableyou automatically qualify for the Round of 16.

The teams from number nine to 24 go to play anoda Knockout play-off round with each or how the winners go too Qualification for the round of 16 and the losers go komot for the competition.

Teams that finish in places 25 to 36 after the first eight games are eliminated. There are no longer any teams that are relegated from the Champions League to the Europa League or from the Europa League to the Conference League.

The new format is the same for the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Conference League, with the only difference being that the first phase of the Conference League will consist of six matches instead of eight.

From the round of 16 onwards, the tournament returns to what fans are used to: a home and away match between two teams to qualify for the next round, until the final match which consists only of a first leg on neutral ground.

More match days

UEFA Champions League matches usually take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but UCL matches will now also take place on Thursdays.

Europa League games, which previously only took place on Thursdays, will now take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Conference League games will still mainly take place on Thursdays, but some games will take place on Wednesdays.

Overall, the number of Champions League matches increases from 125 to 189 – an increase of 64 matches.

Which stakeholder tokens

Calrence Seedorf, a former Dutch international and former Champions League winner with Ajax and Real Madrid, said he had no problem with the current UCL format, “but since they have not decided to make some changes, I think we should give them time to see how it goes.”

“It’s nice to create expectations in life, but we’re sure to offer fans some interesting benefits,” he said.

Arne Slot, Liverpool manager, said: “It’s clear that you need a lot of points if you want to get into the top eight. The only thing I like about the new format is that you can watch a beta game on TV every night.”
