Sylvester Stallone gives teaser for TV series “Rocky Prequel”

The Rocky Prequel gets a new update from Sylvester Stallone, who gives a progress update and a sneak peek of the story. After the release of the first film in 1976, Stallone’s Rocky Balboa returned for five sequels as well as two Believe spin-off films. In 2019, Stallone announced that he would expand the franchise with another Rocky prequel TV show, although few updates on the project have surfaced since then.

In a recent interview with the Inspire me Podcasts, Stallone shares an update on the Rocky Prequel and reveals that he has now written “a few pages.” As for what viewers can expect from the story, the actor points to some similarities with Disney’s Lady and the Tramp regarding the story between Rocky and Adrian, Talia Shire’s love interest from the original film. Read Stallone’s comment below:

“The Rocky prequel is very dear to my heart. I’ve written a few pages of it and it seems to be writing itself. Seeing Adrian at 15, Rocky at 17, Paulie moving to a new neighborhood. Rocky is the bad boy. It’s almost like Lady and the Tramp, but with real people. It’s going to be wonderful.”

Will the Rocky prequel ever happen?

The Sylvester Stallone series faces another major challenge

Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) stands next to the lockers in Rocky (1976).

Five years have passed since the first mention of the Rocky prequel show, and Stallone apparently only recently put ink to paper. It’s not clear why development on the show has been so slow, but it’s possible that Stallone and the other creative minds involved struggled to come up with a story strong enough to justify returning to the same source material again. Now that Stallone has started writing, things could move along more quickly, but the show is likely still quite a while away.

Since the writing has only just begun, Rocky The prequel show will almost certainly not be on camera in 2024. Fans may be able to expect production to start in 2025but that depends on how the scripts turn out. Assuming the writing goes well, Rocky The prequel show could premiere sometime in 2026. However, a prequel show is not the only way the franchise will live on, as it has been confirmed that Creed 4 is in development following the success of the third film in 2023.

Creed 3
starring Michael B. Jordan in the title role, has an impressive 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $276 million worldwide.

While the Believe Sub-franchise has proven that it can be successful even without Stallone’s Rocky Balboa, The upcoming prequel will have the challenging task of recasting this iconic character. Recasting the role of a famous actor is always a challenge, but the task becomes even more difficult as audiences have come to know and love Stallone’s specific interpretation of the character over eight films. Many questions remain unanswered about the Rocky prequel show, but the fact that Stallone has actually started writing is a positive sign that the show is making progress.
