Sweeney is no stranger to the rigorous training required for a role like this. She brings her experience in grappling and kickboxing to her portrayal of Martin.

More about boxing legend Christy Martin

A naturally gifted fighter, Martin’s life changed dramatically when she met her manager – and later husband – Jim Martin in 1989. She broke the barriers of a male-dominated sport, became the first woman to sign with legendary promoter Don King, and made history when she became the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Her charisma, striking looks and strong resilience in the ring earned her a loyal fan base and earned her the title of welterweight champion. But behind her cultivated public image lies a story marked by personal struggles, toxic relationships and a horrific attempt on her life.

The upcoming film will star Sydney Sweeney alongside Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, Jess Gabor, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry and Chad L. Coleman.
