KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Florida football missed a chance for a clean sweep, falling 23-17 in overtime to Tennessee in front of 101,915 at Neyland Stadium.

The Sun’s Kevin Brockway and David Whitley broke up the Florida Gators’ (3-3, 1-2 SEC) disheartening loss. UF scored just three points on four red zone outings in the first half, including a field goal that was wiped off the field that ended the first half due to an illegal substitution penalty and left 12 players on the field.

“A lot of missed opportunities in the first half that really came back to haunt them,” Brockway said. “You knew they were going to do it somehow in a game like this.”

The loss dropped Florida football coach Billy Napier to 2-12 against ranked teams and will again be a hot topic of discussion given some of the coaching decisions. In addition to the 12-man-on-the-field penalty, Florida also experienced a drive stall in the red zone on 4th-and-1 on a read-option play from the shotgun, leaving Eugene Wilson III for no gain was stopped.

“It would have been a big challenge for Billy to go to Neyland and beat a top 10 team,” Whitley said. “But it’s almost emblematic of what happened to him, I just can’t quite put it together.”
