Suspect found dead at home after standoff; 2 officers injured

THORNTON, Colo. (KKTV) – Two officers were injured in the line of duty Wednesday while trying to defuse an active shooter situation in a neighborhood north of Denver.

The situation began just before 9 a.m. when Thornton police responded to reports of shots fired at a home in a neighborhood near York Street and East 160th Avenue.

When officers arrived at the scene, they were met by a man with a rifle who began shooting at them, Thornton’s interim police chief told reporters.

“Two of our officers received shrapnel or gunfire,” said Interim Police Chief Greg Reeves.

The suspect continued firing from his home for more than an hour. An aerial video from 11 News sister station CBS Denver showed a heavy police presence on the suburban block, including armored vehicles.

The SWAT team eventually went into the house and found a dead man inside.

No further information has been released at this time.
