Storms and flooding continue to threaten Texas

Numerous thunderstorms are expected again today, with the potential for localized flooding. Parts of the Permian Basin, Big Country and Concho Valley received over seven inches of rain on Monday. We expect another busy day with plenty of heavy showers and storms in these regions. Rain chances will also extend to parts of Central Texas, Hill Country, Edwards Plateau, South Texas, Rio Grande Valley, Coastal Bend, Coastal Plains and Southeast Texas.

Tropical moisture is present, favoring impressive rainfall amounts and the potential for localized flooding. Severe storms are unlikely, but localized flooding is a concern. Rain chances will continue tonight through Wednesday morning across the southeastern 75 percent of Texas.

After a wet Wednesday morning, storms are most likely to approach the Texas Gulf Coast Wednesday afternoon. Wednesday night through Friday, there will be scattered to isolated storms near the Texas Gulf Coast, South Texas, the Rio Grande Valley, and likely into Southeast Texas. The rest of Texas will have significantly lower chances of rain.

Because of the rain and cloud cover, afternoon temperatures will remain below average for early September in most of Texas over the next two days. As the chance of rain decreases later in the week, highs will climb back up to the 30s to 35s across Texas. No tropical calamity is expected to directly impact the Lone Star State over the weekend. We have a tropical patch to watch in the Caribbean that could approach the Gulf of Mexico early next week. The evolution of this system remains uncertain, but we will be watching.
