But all that changed when David Fry broke through with a two-run pinch-hit home run off Beau Brieske in the seventh inning of Game 4 and later hit a perfect sacrifice squeeze bunt for a run in the ninth inning.

On Friday, Vogt repeated Rogers’ “The Gambler” when discussing how Cleveland uses its in-game strategies.

“There were times when we persevered, there were times when we persevered,” Vogt said. “It’s just the feel of the game and the understanding of what the matches will be like. We felt it was the right time to go and David Fry is a great baseball player and did it.”

Vogt pushed all the right buttons and said it was easier to hold back some of his plays because the Guardians were working with a lead.

“We’ve had a very similar rhythm all year in the way we use our chips, our pinch-hits or our bullpen, and we stuck with that last night,” Vogt told reporters Friday. “We didn’t go all in early. When you’re not on the ground, you have a chance to make a save, make a shot or do things like that.”

Catcher Austin Hedges said wins and losses answer all the questions outside the clubhouse.

“If we lost the game you will say he made terrible decisions. When we win the game you will say he made brilliant decisions,” Hedges said. “That’s all it seems to amount to. If we win, you’ll be smart. If we lose, you’re stupid. That’s how sport works.”

Regardless, Vogt said he had a lot of fun managing Game 4. It was the type of game where you work hard during the season to put yourself in a position to play, he said.

“The lead-up and the decisions you have to make are a little more important, but for us it felt like a completely normal game,” said Vogt. “That’s how our players attacked in every game. It helped me stay calm and in control.”
