Steelers are “active participants” in trade talks, Tomlin says

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Steelers enter Week 10 rested after a bye last week. They also remain in first place in the AFC North with a record of 6-2.

Tomlin began his press conference by emphasizing the timeliness of the bye week, saying it allowed for reflection from a coaching perspective and allowed some injured players to return to full health.

Cornerback Cam Sutton, who was suspended for eight games to begin the 2024 season, has returned to the team’s active roster.

Tomlin said Sutton’s role as a defensive back has yet to be determined, as Tomlin described the veteran as a “utility back” due to his versatility at the cornerback and safety positions.

Steelers shop at NFL trade deadline

Tomlin said the Steelers are “working the trade market at all positions” to improve the team.

“I recognize that we are active participants in trade discussions, but … we always are.”

The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.

The opposition

Pittsburgh’s Week 10 opponent, the Washington Commanders, are atop the NFC East at 7-2, led by exciting rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.

“The agility of quarterback is an advantage for (Daniels), but I was really impressed with his thoughtfulness with it,” Tomlin said of Daniels’ skills.

Wide receiver Terry McLaurin is a “significant winner in one-on-one duels,” Tomlin said.

Daniels has 1,945 passing yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions, while the Commanders lead the NFL with 15 rushing touchdowns.

Injuries

Mike Tomlin spoke about Justin Fields’ injury late in the week before the win over the New York Giants, telling reporters that Fields suffered an injury on the last day of practice.

“We didn’t want a small problem to become a big problem. Given the bye week and the week ahead of us, we don’t imagine that to be a problem, but again, we’ll let attendance guide how we divide the work.”

The Steelers visit the Washington Commanders on Sunday. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on KDKA-TV.
