Statistical Spotlight: NLCS – Metsmerized Online

The 2024 Mets have fully embraced the “Miracle Mets” Aurora.

Towards the end of the season they had a flair for the dramatic and won theatrically against the Braves, followed by a home run in the 9th inning Pete Alonso in the Wild Card Series against the Brewers and topped it off with a Francisco Lindor Grand slam against the Phillies to send them to the National League Championship Series. This team knows no end. You believe in yourself. They believe they will win. The Statistical Spotlight will highlight which Mets to watch for in the NLCS series against the Dodgers.

Who’s hot?

Mark Vientos. He really made the most of his opportunity at third base in the regular season and that carried over into the postseason. Vientos hit .429/.467/.714 with an outstanding OPS of 1.181 in the playoffs with two doubles, two home runs and 7 RBIs. He was also responsible for five runs produced.

In the NLDS alone, Vientos batted .563 with an OPS of 1.674. In his plate appearances, he used the entire field and both pushed and pulled the ball. The only caveat to his postseason play was his strikeouts. Vientos struck out 10 times during the Wild Card and Division Series. Look for Vientos to limit his strikeouts to make his hitters even more productive during the NLCS.

Who is due?

Jose Iglesias. The pop star has been a spark for the Mets all year. He performed brilliantly on the field, exceeded on-field expectations and added a lot of personality to the Mets’ roster during the regular season.

Iglesias has endured a rough patch early in this postseason. He’s hitting just .207/.233/.207 with an OPS of .440, which is drastically below his regular season numbers. What’s even more concerning is that his K% is up significantly compared to the regular season. During the regular season his K% was 13.4% and in the postseason it increased to 23.3%. To the naked eye, it looks like Iglesias is trying to do too much. Compared to his short, compact swing, he makes significantly larger cuts. Iglesias has already made his mark on this team this season, now he just needs to get back to basics. Rely on what got him to this place, contact. Look for Iglesias to shorten his swing to score some crucial hits during the NLCS.

The Mets will travel across the country to face the Dodgers in the NLCS. The Dodgers have a fearsome lineup Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Freddie Freemanand many others who have postseason experience. Another noticeable player will be Yoshinobu Yamamotowho chose the Dodgers over the Mets in the offseason. Hopefully the Mets have gotten some rest instead of rust as they wait for the NLCS to start. The first game is scheduled for Sunday at 8:15 p.m. EST.
