Aidan Hutchinson is out of the hospital and back in his native Michigan, but the Pro Bowl defense still has a long road to recovery.

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell said Wednesday that Hutchinson flew home after undergoing surgery to repair his broken left leg and will be welcomed by the team during his four to six months of rehab.

“I spoke to him yesterday and he’s doing well,” Campbell said. “Now he’s trying to process everything, it’s still pretty new and so specific: ‘What is this? Where should I go?’ what you would expect, I mean he’s lying in the hospital room with his leg up, but he’s back and I know he didn’t want to be a stranger.

Hutchinson broke the tibia and fibula in his left leg during the Lions’ 47-9 win over the Dallas Cowboys last week and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

Campbell reiterated Wednesday that the Lions are ready to bolster a defensive line that has already lost Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, Kyle Peko and John Cominsky to long-term injuries, but that they feel no rush to do so.

The NFL trade deadline is November 5th.

“I think it’s literally about doing your homework,” Campbell said. “You sift through things, not just what’s on the tape, but also what else is out there that you don’t really know about. You look at someone and think, ‘Well, I might be open to it, but you’ve got it.’ 24 hours.’ Okay, something is going on. Brad looks at everything, nothing is off the table, but we’re just not in a hurry.

The Lions (4-1) are still evaluating their internal pass rush options ahead of Sunday’s showdown against the undefeated Minnesota Vikings (5-0).

Josh Paschal will start at a defensive end spot, and the Lions signed Isaiah Thomas from the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad on Tuesday to provide rotational help on the edge.

POTENTIAL HUTCH REPLACEMENT: Isaac Ukwu is part of Detroit Lions’ plan to replace Aidan Hutchinson: ‘Can’t let them down’

Linebacker Trevor Nowaske and practice squad defensive end Isaac Ukwu played in Hutchinson’s place against the Cowboys, and Campbell mentioned practice squad veteran Pat O’Connor as another option this week. O’Connor, a seventh-round pick of the Lions in 2017, has played 65 games in his career, all for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

As for Hutchinson, Campbell said the NFL sack leader had talked in his rehab about returning to the building “if it made sense.”

“He knows he’s welcome here anytime and we’d like to see him,” Campbell said. “The whole team would like to see him. He’s a big part of us and we hate it for him, but yeah, so we’ll see.”
