St Mirren vs Celtic: Scottish Premiership – BBC Sport

The big news ahead of kick-off in Paisley was confirmation that O’Riley’s departure from Celtic is imminent as the midfielder undergoes a medical in Brighton.

Paulo Bernardo took over from the Danish international and while the former Benfica player is expected to replace some of O’Riley’s goals, it was the two established midfield stars who paved the way for the visitors.

McGregor fired a left-footed shot into the bottom corner in the third minute, using the slippery surface to his advantage. Celtic remained calm.

Hatate scored a second goal with a beautiful direct finish after a Daizen Maeda knockdown and there could have been more in a great first half.

Rodgers’ team put St Mirren under pressure, forcing errors in danger areas and confidently passing the ball around on Paisley’s slippery pitch.

Celtic continued to dominate after the break and their third goal was fully deserved.

Kuhn – who again looked good as a substitute – broke into the St Mirren penalty area and laid the ball off for Johnston, who fired high over Balcombe’s desperate dive.

There are tougher tests ahead, but Rodgers’ performance in midfield will have been particularly encouraging.

Hatate in particular shone, using clever movement to get into dangerous positions and creating five scoring opportunities in addition to his goal. If he stays fit, he can step in in O’Riley’s absence.

Next up, Celtic face Rangers at home in their first Old Firm game of the season next Sunday.
