Spring ISD has placed a Northgate Elementary School teacher and two support staff on administrative leave following allegations that a child was given a sleeping pill in the classroom.

According to a statement released by the district, a parent told Northgate Elementary administration that their child received the patch from a teacher.

Spring ISD removed the teacher from the classroom, according to the statement.

The district emphasized that this incident is a direct violation of board policy FFAC, which prohibits employees from administering prescription or non-prescription medications, herbal substances, steroids or nutritional supplements to students unless authorized by district policy.

The following media statement was sent to KPRC 2:

“As Spring ISD superintendent, I would like to directly address the recent incident at Northgate Elementary involving two teachers and two support staff. The report that a teacher allegedly gave a student a sleeping pill is deeply disturbing and completely unacceptable. Please be assured that upon becoming aware of the incident, the staff involved were immediately removed from the classroom, a government and police investigation was initiated, and we have addressed the concerns of the student’s family and apologized sincerely.

To be clear, it is completely unacceptable for an employee to administer any type of medication, including sleeping pills. This action violates district policy and Spring ISD will not tolerate any behavior that endangers student safety.

At Spring ISD, one of our core values is to prioritize what is best for our students, and unfortunately this incident fell short of that goal. The matter is currently under investigation and we will take all necessary steps to prevent this from happening again.”

The investigation is ongoing and no further details have been released at this time.
