Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder would support the state capital’s bid to host the Olympics in 2040. The CSU politician has the Paris model of 2024 in mindSöder said on Wednesday on the sidelines of a closed meeting of the CSU parliamentary group in the Bavarian monastery of Banz. As in Paris, there should be “no monumental buildings”, but existing structures should be used.

Last month, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD), who is also responsible for sport, signed a declaration with the German Olympic Sports Confederation regarding a German bid for the 2040 Olympic Games. The cities of Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Leipzig and Munich joined the declaration.

Munich was the venue for the 1972 Summer Olympics, and the German Athletics Association will apply to host the 2029 or 2031 World Championships using the Olympic Stadium used at that time. Munich had applied to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, but was clearly defeated by Pyeongchang/South Korea.

It is still unclear when the 2040 Summer Games will be awarded. Los Angeles will be the next host in 2028, followed by Brisbane in 2032. The decision for 2036 is still pending.
