Sporting KC beats Rapids and keeps playoff hopes alive

Alan Pulido and Erik Thommy each scored a brace as Sporting Kansas City cruised to a 4-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids to keep its slim playoff hopes alive on Wednesday night in Kansas City, Kansas. Pulido scored the first two goals for SKC and Thommy scored the last two.

Sporting (8-15-7, 31 points) scored four goals, their best performance of the season. They are eight points below the red line in the Western Conference.

Sporting had a 31-6 shot advantage over Colorado (14-10-5, 47 points).

After putting Sporting 1-0 up with a goal in the eighth minute, Pulido scored his second goal in the 49th minute. Zorhan Bassong intercepted a pass deep in Colorado territory. He passed it to Stephen Afrifa, who found Pulido in a diamond of Rapids defenders. He danced between the quartet before firing the ball past Colorado goalkeeper Zack Steffen on a one-timing pitch.

Thommy increased the lead to 3-0 in the 69th minute with a shot that slid into the bottom right corner of the goal. Thommy received a pass from Willy Agada on the left side of the box, and no Colorado defender picked it up.

Colorado got on the scoreboard in the 75th minute when Michael Edwards scored his first MLS goal with a backheel in front of the net, but Thommy scored his second in the 82nd minute.

SKC took an early lead after Logan Ndenbe broke through on the left and fired the ball into the middle of the pitch where Andreas Maxso deflected the ball but was unable to control it. Pulido received the ball, dribbled to the right and fired it past Steffen.

In the 40th minute, Agada almost made it 2-0. Following a Johnny Russell corner, Agada jumped up to head the ball, but his effort hit the left post and went off the goal.

Russell and Agada also came close to scoring in the 45th minute. Russell pushed the ball into the box and then attempted a cross to Agada, but the pass was just out of Agada’s reach.
