Spooky Season Watching Guide: 13 Movies and TV Shows Guaranteed to Frighten You Heading into Halloween

CNN

While fall vibes and pumpkin spice lattes have been awaiting us for several weeks, it’s now official: the spooky season is finally here.

You may have already gotten in the mood with entries like the hilarious “Agatha All Along” on Disney+, the slow-moving “Rosemary’s Baby” prequel “Apartment 7A” on Paramout+, or went to the cinema with the dazzling and gory “The Substance” But don’t worry, there’s a lot more where this came from.

Here’s your handy guide to everything spooky this Shocktober has to offer on screens and streams:

Sarah Paulson in

“American Horror Story” star Sarah Paulson looks spooky as ever in this period piece-cum-psychological horror. It follows a woman in 1930s Oklahoma who becomes convinced that something evil is targeting her family while dealing with traumatic dust storms in the area.

“Hold Your Breath” premieres October 3rd on Hulu.

Ariana deBose in

Oscar-winning actress Ariana DeBose stars in this spooky culinary fable about an aspiring chef opening her first restaurant and the ghost of the property’s previous owner, who threatens to… foil her plans. Featuring “Euphoria” breakout star Barbie Ferreira.

The film premieres on Prime Video on October 3rd.

Vampires never really go out of style…just ask Stephen King. His second published novel, 1975’s “Salem’s Lot,” is about a quaint town in (where else?) Maine that is overrun by bloodsuckers. After two rather dated-looking TV miniseries – one from 1979 and the other from 20 years ago starring Rob Lowe – this film version seems to be an elegant and spooky new adaptation.

“’Salem’s Lot” premieres Oct. 3 on Max, which, like CNN, is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.

Mel Gibson and Mason Thames in

Judging by the trailer, this PG-13 rated prank still looks a little creepy, with a healthy dose of Stranger Things-style nostalgia. Kids on bikes in Martha’s Vineyard team up with a retired police officer (Mel Gibson) to investigate mysterious and most likely monstrous forces invading their island. Look out for Patrick Renna, of “Sandlot” fame, a baseball umpire.

“Monster Summer” hits theaters on October 4th.

The latest installment in the spooky found-footage horror series that began with 2012’s “V/H/S,” “Beyond” has a distinct sci-fi bent and features six bloodthirsty stories that promise to “push the boundaries of fear and suspense to postpone,” according to the film’s IMDb synopsis.

“V/H/S/Beyond” streams October 4th on Shudder.

Dylan O'Brien in

Starring Dylan O’Brien of “Teen Wolf” and “Love and Monsters” fame, “Caddo Lake” follows the disappearance of a little girl on the murky Caddo Lake and how past secrets may be connected to what happened to her . If you’re afraid of what might be lurking beneath the surface of the water, this film is definitely not for you. (Or is it?)

“Caddo Lake” premieres October 10th on Max.

Caleb Dolden and Yvonne Strahovski in

“Teacup” has a similar feel to “Hold Your Breath” without the historical aspect, and follows a group of neighbors trapped on a rural Georgia farm and facing a mysterious but seemingly unstoppable threat. Just the guy with the old-fashioned gas mask is enough to crank up the scary factor. Starring “Underworld” star Scott Speedman and Yvonne Strahovski from “Handmaid’s Tale.”

The TV series premieres October 10th on Peacock.

David Howard Thornton as Art the Clown in

Easily the most disgusting title on this list, “Terrifier 3” follows the absolutely murderous and insane Art the Clown as he wreaks havoc before the holiday season, entering the evil ranks of the Christmas horror subgenre (think “Krampus” , but). even bloodier). If the sequel calculations mean anything – and “Terrifier 2” was easily considered the scariest film of 2022 (or perhaps ever) – this film is sure to bring new menace to the term “stomach-churning.” Be warned.

“Terrifier 3” hits theaters on October 11th.

Enter Naomi Scott

Speaking of frightening sequels, “Smile 2” picks up on the disturbing premise of 2022’s first installment – a demonic force that causes those who see it to…smile (but not in a good way) before turning himself in a horrific way – and frames it in the glittering world of an aspiring pop star (Naomi Scott). Look for appearances from Drew “Scream” Barrymore and “White Lotus” star Lukas Gage.

“Smile 2” hits theaters on October 18th.

Julie Bowen

Building on underrated titles like “Jennifer’s Body,” this seemingly self-aware title follows the aftermath of a grisly occult murder and the struggling high school heavy metal band trying to ride the wave of interest and emerge as satanic metal Band to make money. Apparently this plan is going completely off the rails.

The eight-part series will be released on October 18th by Peacock.

Where the term “torture porn” was arguably invented, “Saw” came out an astonishing 20 years ago and introduced the world to the devious…playful serial killer Jigsaw, who went on to wreak bloody mayhem in nine other titles. Experience the place where it all began: Cary Elwes, Leigh Whannell, Shawnee Smith and Tobin Bell.

“Saw” Unrated will be in theaters on October 20th and 23rd.

Kelsey Asbille in

Not much is known from the trailer for this eerie-looking film, except that one unfortunate soul (“Fargo’s” Kelsey Asbille) has 20 minutes in the woods to escape the clutches of a murderer before his body is shut down by a paralyzing agent. Remember the horrific scene with Michelle Pfeiffer in What Lies Beneath? It’s that mood. Starring Finn Wittrock, another lead actor from “American Horror Story,” and co-produced by horror maestro Sam Raimi.

“Don’t Move” will stream on Netflix on October 25th.

Melissa Barrera and Tommy Dewey there

“Your Monster,” a bizarre but crazy-looking mix of romantic comedy and horror film, is about a disturbed woman (Melissa Barrera, fresh from 2022’s “Scream” and “Scream VI”) who has a beastly presence in her closet , but charming monster discovered . What follows will most likely be a cross between Beauty and the Beast and a therapy session about getting over a monster of an ex.

“Your Monster” hits theaters on October 25th.
