So tonight is a really big game for the Chicago Sky.

The fate of the Chicago Sky in the postseason could be decided in just a few hours.

With a record of 13-25 this year and just 2-8 in their last 10 games, Chicago is currently ranked 9th in the WNBA standings. The top 8 teams in the league advance to the postseason.

The Washington Mystics are the team currently standing in the Sky’s way, despite having an identical 13-25 record this year. They have used a surprising 7-3 streak to overtake Chicago, including a decisive 89-58 victory over the Sky on September 11. That win secured the tiebreaker advantage over Chicago, meaning Washington would get the final playoff spot if the two teams finished with the same record.

That’s why today’s matchup is so important for the Sky. While the Mystics face the No. 1 seed New York Liberty, the Sky will face the Atlanta Dream. That Dream team has been anything but good, losing three of its last four games and sitting 10th in the WNBA standings. Although they also have a 13-25 record, Chicago has beaten them in each of their last two games. There’s a real chance the Sky can enter tomorrow’s contest with sole possession of the 8th seed.

If the Sky lose this game on the way to the Dream, a Mystics win could put them out of the postseason immediately. Even if the Mystics lose, the Sky would be in a very difficult position, with only one game left against the Connecticut Sun – the third-best team in the WNBA. The Dream would have their fate in their own hands as they enter their final game against the Liberty.

Chicago will be without Angel Reese for the rest of the season due to a wrist injury. The No. 3 overall pick, Kamilla Cardoso, will also be out day to day due to a shoulder injury. The pressure is particularly on Chennedy Carter’s shoulders, who has been one of the best backcourt scorers in the league this season. But can she single-handedly take the Sky into the playoffs? The Sky’s 2-10 record in the last 12 games speaks against it.

To be clear, all other playoff spots are already taken with only a handful of regular-season games left on the schedule. This race for the right to face the New York Liberty in a three-game first-round series is the only one left.
