SMU at Stanford odds, picks and predictions

The number 23 SMU Mustangs (5-1, 2-0 ACC) and the Stanford Cardinal (2-4, 1-2) meet on Saturday at Stanford Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET (ACC Network). Below we analyze the college football odds from BetMGM Sportsbook SMU vs. Stanford Opportunitiesand make our college football picks and predictions.

SMU earned a big road win over Louisville 34-27, overcoming a 6.5-point underdog status and reaching the over with a total of 55 points. Despite a double-digit lead, the Mustangs were able to hold on thanks to the QB Kevin Jenningswho set career highs with 281 passing yards, 113 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. Security Isaiah Nwokobia sealed the victory with a crucial end zone interception in the final minutes.

Stanford suffered its third straight loss, falling 49-7 to No. 11 Notre Dame. Two of those losses came against ranked teams, underscoring the challenge of their recent schedule. The Cardinals’ offense once again struggled, totaling just 137 yards and just 28 points over the last three games. Notre Dame’s defense stifled Stanford, racking up 8 tackles for loss, 4 sacks and a fumble recovery, virtually eliminating any chance of a Cardinals comeback.

SMU vs. Stanford tips and predictions

forecast

SMU 37, Stanford 13

Money line

HAPPEN.

It’s hard not to love SMU (-750) in this matchup, but not at these odds. I’m going to put my bet on the spread.

Against the spread

BET SMU -16.5 (-115).

The Mustangs have proven right away with seven wins that they can handle business on the road, and their offense is finding its rhythm and covering the spread in the last three games. Stanford, on the other hand, had major problems. As double-digit underdogs in their last 13 games, they are 4-9 ATS and in that role have lost the two games this season by an average of 34 points. Against teams ranked in the AP, the Cardinals have lost 15 straight games as underdogs and failed to cover in 14 of them. Meanwhile, SMU has been dominant within the conference, winning 15 of the last 16 such games and covering teams not in the AP rankings in each of their most recent meetings on October 4th. Stanford has also lost the first half in 7 of its last 8 home games against conference opponents.

Given SMU’s form and Stanford’s struggles, going with the Mustangs for the points seems like the right decision.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 53.5 (-110).

SMU’s offense is in full swing, with Jennings leading a balanced attack with 1,014 passing yards, 6 touchdowns and just 1 interception. RB Brashard Smith adds another dimension with 561 rushing yards and 7 scores while WR RJ Maryland was a reliable target with 304 yards and 3 touchdowns. This strong offense has helped SMU exceed the point total in four of the last five games and average over 40 points per game in the last three games.

Stanford’s defense has struggled mightily, allowing an average of 34.7 points per game, including 49 points to Notre Dame last week. Their vulnerable secondary could have more trouble against a red-hot passing game from SMU. Although 5 of Stanford’s last 6 conference games have fallen, their defensive woes leave them vulnerable to a high-scoring affair. Expect both teams to top the standings.
