The CEO of British smartphone startup Nothing is ending the company’s hybrid working arrangement – and encouraging employees who are unhappy with the decision to look for a new job.

Carl Pei, who founded the London-based consumer electronics company in October 2020, told employees in an email shared on X that the company will switch entirely to office work from October.

Although he admitted the decision was “controversial,” Pei said Nothing would not be able to reach its full potential as a company under a remote or hybrid arrangement.

“Remote work is not compatible with high demands and high speed,” said Pei. Pei has long positioned Nothing’s phones as Challenger for Apple’s iPhoneand reiterated in his email his desire to make Nothing a “generational company.”

As for the company’s employees, Pei said the new arrangement will be “no different than before COVID,” but he also left open the possibility that employees who want more flexibility can leave the company.

“We know this isn’t the right kind of organization for everyone, and that’s OK,” he said. “We should look for a mutual fit. You should find an environment where you can thrive, and we need to find people who want to stick with us to the end in the decades to come.”

The tech world is struggling to adapt to the world of hybrid work, with executives expressing concern about productivity losses from remote setups and employees being in the office full-time. Google’s (GOOGL) Former CEO and Chairman Eric Schmidt said in a lecture at Stanford University in July that Google falling behind in AI because of remote work. Later went back the commentsand said he had “misspoken”.

Studies have shown mixed results when it comes to the actual productivity impact of remote work. While some research has shown that Working from home increases productivity as much as 24%, others have proven the opposite.
