Slurry truck collides with tanker on I84

UPDATE FROM ISP: Idaho State Police have released information on one of the reported accidents on I84 north of Twin Falls Friday afternoon.

We are still waiting for information on the second accident, which may have involved dead animal parts on the highway.

Manure truck rams tanker truck on highway north of Twin Falls

According to the ISP report, the accident occurred on Friday afternoon around 2:15 p.m.:

A 26-year-old man from Wendell, Idaho, and a minor passenger were traveling eastbound on Interstate 84 (I84) near mile marker 180 in a 1998 Freightliner semi-trailer loaded with manure. A 49-year-old man from Clovis, California, was traveling in a 2013 Freightliner semi-trailer when he crashed into the rear of the 1998 Freightliner.

The 2013 Freightliner was carrying 20,000 kilograms of sugar cane molasses and lost about 450 kilograms in the collision. The 1998 Freightliner came to a stop in the median and caught fire.

The driver of the 2013 Freightliner was wearing a seat belt. The driver of the 1998 Freightliner and the juvenile passenger were not wearing seat belts and were taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

The left lane of eastbound I84 was closed for about four and a half hours.

ISP is investigating the accident.


ORIGINAL STORY: The highway north of Twin Falls was reportedly in chaos Friday afternoon as several accidents caused massive traffic delays.

There is no official report from the Idaho State Police regarding the incident, but social media is full of videos, pictures and explanations regarding the accidents. Along with the explanations, there is also some conflicting information, so we will update this story once the police report is released.

Why was there a traffic jam on I84 in southern Idaho on Friday afternoon?

Based on videos from social media groups including Twin Falls County Traffic, News, Crime & Weather Blog and Magic Valley Rants and Raves, there were two crashes on the interstate north of Twin Falls in the same area and at the same time. Idaho 511 still shows slow-moving eastbound traffic on I84 between mile markers 178 and 183. As of early afternoon, 511 showed slow-moving traffic in both directions on I84 from the first Jerome exit to just past the Hansen Bridge intersection.

Citizen reports state that in one accident, a semi-trailer carrying dead animal parts had to stop abruptly and part of the trailer’s contents spilled onto the road. The other accident may have involved a manure truck that hit a tanker truck and skidded on the road. The truck’s cab is said to have burned.
