Skyscanner: More and more weddings abroad in the Asia-Pacific region

Skyscanner recently conducted a survey in partnership with OnePoll targeting adults in Asia Pacific who are planning or have already celebrated their wedding. The aim was to identify key aspects related to weddings, particularly overseas weddings, as well as related activities such as honeymoons and pre-wedding events.

The survey involved 2,000 people from Australia, 2,000 from India, 1,000 from Singapore and 1,000 from South Korea, all aged 18 and over.

Respondents from India, Singapore and South Korea prefer Asian destinations for their wedding, such as Thailand (see picture).

Key findings for the region showed there is a strong demand for overseas weddings, with over 68% of adults aged 18 and above either having married overseas or considering it, with India leading the trend.

When asked about attending a wedding abroad as a guest, 74% of Indians and 52% of Singaporeans said they have attended one before. On the other hand, 61% of South Koreans and 56% of Australians have never attended a wedding abroad.

In terms of budget, about 30% are willing to invest 26-50% more for a wedding abroad than for a traditional ceremony in their hometown.

In terms of planning, about a third of respondents said they use social media to help plan their overseas wedding, while over 20% of respondents from each market consider using OTAs. However, a smaller percentage are turning to travel metasearch engines and AI-powered search tools instead.

When choosing location, adults from Asia-Pacific prefer regions close to home. Respondents from India, Singapore and South Korea prefer Asia, and those from Australia choose Oceania as their first choice.
