Life is good for former MTV VJ Simon Rex. The actor has not only put his skills to good use in front of the camera – he won an Independent Spirit Award in 2021 for his role in the film Red Rocket – but he has made enough money over the years to travel between his rental home in Los Angeles and his property in Joshua Tree.

But Rex’s Joshua Tree residence is not exactly what you would expect from an award-winning actor. Instead of a sprawling mansion that Scary movie And What I like About You Star lives in a 41 square meter house made from a shipping container in the desert.

He spoke about it in detail during his appearance at Family outings with the Meyers Brothers Podcast – read on to find out all the details.

Simon Rex owns a shipping container in Joshua Tree.

During his conversation with Josh and Seth Meyers, Rex revealed that he lives a very different life than most Hollywood celebrities these days.

“I live in a shipping container out in Joshua Tree,” he told the brothers on the August 6, 2024 episode of their podcast. “It’s basically a 500-square-foot space. You learn that you don’t need a lot, and there’s something Zen-like about simplifying everything and not having a lot of clutter because you don’t need all that stuff, you know?”

The home’s small size, however, doesn’t mean Rex had to work on a budget. Instead, he opted to have the “tiny” home built specifically for himself by an architect who made the most of two small shipping containers that Rex placed on part of his 2-acre property on the edge of California’s famous national park.

“It’s off the grid, you know, meaning there’s no infrastructure,” he revealed, adding that he gets his water from a well and uses solar power for his electricity needs. “It feels like you’re on a 20-acre property and there’s no one around as far as the eye can see. I mean, as a city person, you couldn’t be further away from your comfort zone and in nature. And yes, it’s a tiny box, all glass on one side.”

Honestly, that sounds like a dream!

The actor found his inspiration while driving through Joshua Tree and falling in love with another home designed by the same architect. After spending so much of his life in places like Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco, Rex told the podcast hosts that he desperately craved a more quiet and peaceful lifestyle, and he says he’s definitely found something he’s found in his new neighborhood.

“It’s like Jesus going into the desert for 40 days,” he joked. “You experience it very intensely. And after a few days out there alone, a lot of stuff comes up. It’s like therapy. It’s like self-induced therapy.”

But that doesn’t mean he’s cut off from the rest of the world during his stay. In fact, he says he still spends a lot of time on his phone and watching TV, just like the rest of us.

Tiny houses and shipping containers can be an environmentally friendly form of housing.

Not all container homes are off the grid like Rex’s, but the ones that are definitely have a positive impact on the environment, as they usually rely on practices like rainwater harvesting and a minimalist lifestyle to function. And not only that, when these homes are built from recycled containers that would otherwise have ended up in a landfill somewhere, the environmental benefit becomes even greater.

Another benefit of these tiny houses? They probably don’t cost as much as a traditional home, which is something most people can’t afford in today’s market, which is why tiny houses are the only option for some people. Still, from Rex’s description, this sounds like an absolutely wonderful way to live.
