After LSU fell to USC 27-20, losing its fifth straight opening game, a frustrated Brian Kelly took the podium at his postgame press conference.

The clip quickly went viral on social media, in which Kelly said he was “angry” at his football team and expressed regret that he had to raise the same concerns again after a loss.

Kelly concluded by saying he wasn’t doing a good enough job as a coach. But that wasn’t enough to avoid the ire of national media, including First Take’s Shannon Sharpe, who didn’t mince her words when criticizing Kelly on Monday morning.

“I think that’s bullshit. I think he should have started with what he accomplished. ‘I’m not doing a good enough job.’ He said the exact same thing last year when Florida State beat them. ‘We’re clearly not the team I thought we were.’ No, you’re not the coach you thought you were,” Sharpe said. “At some point, it comes down to coaching. It comes down to accountability.”

“They got 10 penalties for basically 100 yards. You either train that behavior or you condone that kind of behavior. But how about this: ‘Oh, their quarterback outplayed ours.’ Lincoln Riley outplayed you.”

Sharpe went on to say that Kelly should have taken more responsibility and vented his frustration with his players behind closed doors.

“The really great coaches – look at Dabo. When he was beaten by Georgiahe said, ‘That’s coaching. That’s on me.’ Coach Saban used to do that all the time,” Sharpe said. “The really, really good coaches, the coaches that can get through to their players and make them understand that even if a player makes a mistake or does something repeatedly, they’ll take it and go behind closed doors.

“If he wanted to have that kind of conversation, he would have said, ‘Guys, we’ve been talking about this all summer. We had that problem a lot last year. We started to feel good and let the teams get back into the game. And that backfired on us.’ If you wanted to do that behind closed doors, I would have no problem with that. But Brian Kelly has repeatedly engaged in that kind of behavior, publicly reprimanding his players and abdicating responsibility himself.”

Those are certainly harsh words, but there is a similar frustration among LSU fans after the team once again failed to win against a strong conference opponent in Week 1.

There is still plenty of time to turn things around, but the Tigers are already facing many questions after the first game of the season.
