Shane Beamer shares the strengths and weaknesses of the South Carolina WRs

Heading into the 2024 season, South Carolina’s wide receiver room was a part of the roster under scrutiny.

Two of his top pass-catching targets – Xavier Legette and Juice Wells – left the program via the NFL Draft and the transfer portal, respectively. Since then, the team has made an influx of transfers and recruits to fill Legette and Wells’ vacancies.

The Gamecocks’ wide receivers have spent a lot of time since August building chemistry and working out any growing pains. Despite some struggles, head coach Shane Beamer has confidence in the players at the position through five games.

“We feel like we have a solid group of guys who have all blitzed before,” Beamer said. “Just like every position on our roster, we continue to try to make these guys better.”

Many of the team’s wideouts are in the midst of their first college football season and competing at the SEC level. For those who played in Group of Five conferences — or even high school conferences — last year, some adjustments were necessary given a slight increase in competition.

Despite these challenges, the wide receiver room has improved, Beamer said. And this improvement also applies to Nyck harbora sophomore and former five-star recruit who moved into the position last year.

“I like the way they keep getting better,” Beamer said. “There is no doubt in my mind that Nyck Harbor has gotten better as a player since the start of the season. And you can say that about a lot of people.”

South Carolina’s wide receiver room has also become a “spread the wealth” room, a change from recent seasons. Newbie far away Mazeo Bennett He currently leads the team with 200 receiving yards and 14 receptions. But Gage Larvadain, Vandrevius Jacobs And Jared Brown also posted 100-yard seasons.

The Gamecocks’ recent starting lineups have also demonstrated their versatility, Beamer said.

“We actually used a differential receiver in the last three games. Nyck started on Saturday. The Saturday before was Gage. The Saturday before, Dre was one of our starters,” Beamer said. “Mazeo was consistent out there too.”

However, Beamer knows that South Carolina’s wideouts still have room to grow. Some players still need to fine-tune aspects of their games, he said.

“When we talk about the specifics of how to proceed, they’re right in the middle, just like all of our positions,” Beamer said. “So we need to be more detailed.”

But Beamer said he was impressed with the development of the wide receiver room for 2024 and beyond.

“I like the progress these guys have made. I think coach (Mike) Furrey“s” also does a great job with coaching and recruiting,” Beamer said. “We were FaceTiming recruits last night, and the term is ‘hustle and bustle of activity.’ So I told him it was a ‘fervor of activity’.”
