Shams Charania replaces Adrian Wojnarowski at ESPN as NBA insider

ESPN is replacing former NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski with his main rival and former protégé.

Shams Charania announced Monday that he is joining ESPN as senior NBA insider, moving from Wojnarowski’s main competitor for news surrounding the league to his successor at the network.

“It is an honor to join ESPN as the company’s Senior NBA Insider,” Charania wrote on social media. “I can’t wait to join an incredible group of colleagues at ESPN and serve audiences worldwide.”

Wojnarowski announced his resignation from ESPN last month. He currently works as the general manager of men’s basketball at his alma mater, St. Bonaventure. Charania, who most recently worked for The Athletic and FanDuel TV, was immediately considered a leading candidate to take over Wojnarowski’s role.

The 30-year-old had become a well-known NBA player over the past decade, first making headlines as a teenager before joining Wojnarowski at Yahoo! worked. Sport. Charania was so young that the Chicago Bulls didn’t immediately give him eligibility to play, so he drove to Bucks games in Milwaukee to interact with NBA players and staff. In 2014, he began gaining national traction when he announced that Luol Deng had been traded from the Bulls to the Cleveland Cavaliers for RealGM.
