Several major roads around Western Washington will be closed this weekend

Motorists are bracing for another weekend of congestion as several major road closures will affect their travel plans.

The Washington State Department of Transportation said a handful of major roads will be affected from Friday night into early Monday morning.

On the last major weekend of closures, drivers were delayed for hours.

WSDOT said drivers should begin planning ahead as soon as possible.

I-5

All lanes of I-5 will be closed overnight this weekend between SR 18 in Federal Way and 54th Avenue East in Fife. Both directions will be closed on Friday and Saturday evenings and will reopen at 12pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Motorists should expect diversions and traffic jams until at least midday on Saturday and Sunday. WSDOT said signs will direct motorists to a detour route on SR 99 while I-5 is closed.

The closure is part of WSDOT’s SR 167 Completion Project.

There will also be road construction in the Seattle area that will reduce I-5 to two lanes in both directions overnight Saturday and Sunday between Boeing Field and Interurban Avenue South in Tukwila. WSDOT said it plans to re-sign the road “to preserve and preserve the aging highway.”

SR99

The SR 99 Tunnel in Seattle will remain closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Sunday to allow crews to conduct the first federally required inspection of the tunnel.

Floating bridge SR 520

The SR 520 floating bridge over Lake Washington will be closed between I-5 and 92nd Avenue Northeast in Clyde Hill from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. The closure will also close the path to cyclists and pedestrians.

Ballard Bridge

The Ballard Bridge in Seattle will be closed Friday evening through Monday morning for maintenance and preservation work. The Seattle Department of Transportation said motorists would have to seek a detour, but cyclists and pedestrians could cross the bridge if it was safe to do so.

USA 2

Both directions of US 2 will be closed overnight Friday between SR 9 and 88th Street Southeast in Snohomish. According to WSDOT, motorists can follow a marked detour around the closure.

I-405 southbound

Up to three lanes of southbound I-405 between SR 522 and Northeast 160th Street near Bothell will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday. The closures include several ramps.

According to WSDOT, this work requires dry weather and may need to be postponed if it rains.
