Seminole County Evacuation Alert: Why 2 Alerts Were Sent About Hurricane Milton

Seminole County residents received an emergency alert on their cellphones early Wednesday morning informing them that an evacuation order had been issued for the county. Minutes later, a second warning was issued clarifying that the evacuation order applied to people in mobile homes and low-lying areas.

“Seminole County has issued an evacuation order due to Hurricane Milton,” the first warning said.

Ten minutes later, a second alert was sent: “Evac order for RVs, flood areas and those with special needs.”

What happened? Why were two notifications sent?

In a statement, Andy Wontor, public information division chief for the Seminole County Office of Communications, said the alerts were not sent “in error” but that no details were included with the first alert.

“It wasn’t a mistake. It’s just a specific population group. The first alert did not include details of all devices,” he said in an email to FOX 35.

To be clear, Seminole County has issued an evacuation order for those living in mobile homes, low-lying areas and residents with special needs.

Hurricane Milton has developed into a major hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to have devastating and destructive impacts across Florida, including storm surge and flooding on the Gulf Coast, as well as damaged windows, flooding and the threat of tornadoes in Central Florida.

“My heart sank when I received the first news and at this point it is too late for anything,” someone named Amanda wrote in a comment under a post on the Seminole County Facebook page.

“I am concerned about the first warning that was sent out. Everyone is trying their best to stay calm and this has caused panic,” wrote someone named Amber. “It was an intense few minutes trying to figure out what was going on.”
