Selena Gomez reaches incredible financial milestone

Entertainment gossip and news from the Newsweek staff network

Like her best friend Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez has achieved billionaire status.

On Friday, September 6 Bloomberg reported that the 32-year-old’s net worth is $1.3 billion. While many people realize The only murders in the building Star for her singing and acting skills, over 80 percent of her wealth ($1.1 billion), according to the outlet, comes from her investment in Rare Beauty Brands Inc. – the fan-favorite beauty brand founded by Gomez in 2020.

Although Gomez is passionate about both her entertainment career and her cosmetics company, mental health has always been at the forefront of her mind. One percent of Rare Beauty sales goes to the Rare Beauty Impact Fund, which connects people with mental health resources. The singer also co-founded Wondermind, a mental health startup.

Brent Saunders, an investor in Wondermind, spoke with Bloomberg and attributed Gomez’s success to her authenticity. “You have a real role model of how a celebrity (Selena Gomez) can use her influence and expertise to do good and do good business,” Saunders noted. “Selena embodies that.”

In addition to Rare Beauty, other sources of income that contribute to the singer’s wealth include endorsement deals, touring, Wondermind, albums, acting, streaming and real estate. Branding and pop culture expert Stacy Jones said Bloomberg Gomez owes her entrepreneurial spirit to her billionaire status. “Selena is not just a pop star. She is a multifaceted businesswoman with multiple income streams that contribute to her impressive net worth,” Jones noted.

In terms of acting, Gomez earned around $3 million for starring as Alex Russo in the hugely popular Disney show Wizards of Waverly PlaceIn addition, Gomez receives at least $6 million each season for his role as Mobel Mora in Only murders in the building, in which comedians Steve Martin and Martin Short star.

The former Disney star’s enormous social media following – she currently has 424 million followers on Instagram – has led to some major deals with fashion brands like Puma and Coach. In 2016, Gomez earned $10 million as the coach’s figurehead; in 2017, she signed a two-year deal with Puma that reportedly paid her $30 million.

While Gomez’s long-time friend Swift has built her fortune through her music career, Gomez’s wealth – in comparison – is only slightly attributable to her music. (The “Lose You to Love Me” singer is paid primarily through royalties, per Bloomberg(because she didn’t write most of her discography herself.) Still, Gomez knows how to tour, earning a whopping $30 million from ticket sales for her 2016 revival tour.

No matter how Gomez’s net worth breaks down, she is definitely a financial force of nature.
