High winds and increased fire danger led to new fires and an evacuation order in Oklahoma on Monday.

Meanwhile, the growth of the day-long firestorm in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge appears to have stalled.

Evacuation near Cushing as flames spread

On Tuesday afternoon, authorities called for an immediate evacuation of areas east of Cushing as wildfires spread there. The large wildfire threatened areas at the intersection of Highways 33 and 99 east of Cushing and north.

Residents were advised to drive east or west and avoid driving in smoke.

Rush Fire update

The Rush wildfire, which began on Thursday, October 24, covered more than 12,000 acres and about half of it has been contained. A national forest service team took over management of the fire operation on Monday morning.

“There was really no movement outside of our lines yesterday,” Incident Commander Peter Myers said in a video update.

Fire weather continued throughout the day Monday, with multiple wildfires breaking out across the state, and fire danger remained elevated Tuesday and Wednesday.

Myers said the focus Tuesday will be on the northern end of the fire, which is not yet contained, to prevent it from spreading further north.

The team currently has 16 fire engines and expects eight more to arrive Tuesday to assist in the effort.
